Haworth Couldn’t Wear Less!Men and Women of Worth bare all to help save important community buildingsu COMPUTER RELATED u2012 CalendarsIt all started when Jevgenia’s exerciseand dance class from Haworth went on anovernight excursion to the Dales. Whileenjoying the break in the countryside one ofthe dance class members, Sarah Granby, picked up the Grassington Calendar Boys2011 calendar. Following in the footstepsof the ladies of the Rylstone W.I., some ofthe men of Grassington had stripped off toraise money for a local cause. The idea aspioneered by the original Calendar Girls, hasbeen much copied with varying degrees ofsuccess. Though the Grassington offeringwas less than stellar compared to that ofthe ladies slightly further down the valley;the seed was sown in the mind of Sarah, who thought this might be a fun way toraise money for Haworth Parish Churchrestoration fund.It took a while, but wheels were set inmotion and local Worth Valley resident LizBarker and her husband, photographerPaul Barker were drafted in to assist. Itseemed highly appropriate to use Paul tohelp, because during his career as a pressTo advertise call us on 01535 64222714photographer, he covered the launch ofthe original W.I Calendar in 1999, and alsoappeared as an extra in the Calendar Girlsmovie. There have been so many terribleefforts at charity calendars, that thedecision was taken to only proceed onthe understanding that the project wouldbe done well or not at all. Despite thefact that it was to raise money for thechurch, boobs and bottoms would bevisible, and when this was reported in thelocal press, a few people from the parishchurch thought this was a most unsuitableproject for the church to be involved. (Notunlike the Calendar Girls’ story wherethe WI distanced itself from the calendarparticipants) After some smoothing andcajoling and explaining that this was nota particularly new or radical idea...andafterall it was the community coming tothe aid of the church, plans were madeand volunteers enlisted to pose in as greata state of undress as they dare. The goal was to include many peoplefrom different parts of the community, not just church goers or traders. The listgrew rapidly and so many people cameforward that it was eventually decided toproduce two calendars, one featuring menand the other featuring women. A littlefriendly rivalry has been introduced to seewhich version sells in greater quantities. The results will be announced at a partyin the New Year, which as well as havinganother occasion to raise a few morepounds for the church restoration fund, willbe an opportunity to draw the communitytogether for a common cause. The photographs are completed now,and the artwork is done. The calendarincludes a local councillor, a formerLord Mayor, a senior district councillor,a handful of Haworth traders, a host ofinteresting characters from the widerWorth Valley, a bellringer, a minister andhis wife, a plumber, a mechanic, a busker, and a retired Haworth bobby and oompahband leader many will certainly recognise. It is a cast of wonderfully brave and activecitizens willing to participate in communitylife; they deserve a pat on the back andmuch praise for their efforts. From mid October the calendar willbe available from many of the shopson Haworth Main Street and wider inthe community. You can order onlinevia www.worthvalleymag.co.uk. Pleasesupport this fundraising effort andpurchase the calendar for your friends andrelations.
