The Compact of Basil was ceremonially declaredin front of the town hall on 5 th July 1436. This ended the HussiteWars in our lands.The City Walls were built around the emerging city shortly after itsfoundation. The three-kilometre fortifications was divided up by fivegates, of which the Gate of Our Lady is preserved. The double wall tierwas reconstructed into its baroque shape in the 17 th century. The moathas been adapted into a park.A Jewish cemetery recalls the existence of a Jewish community. It wasfounded in 1869 and covers an area of 9000 m 2 and there are more thanone thousand tombstones of members of the local Jewish community -among others the parents of Gustav Mahler. The passagesarose by interconnecting cellars chiselled into the rock in the 14 thcentury, often three floors deep and serving for the storage of beer andhandicraft products. An attraction is theSouth American Pavilion equipped with state-of-the-art technology, foggingsystem, tropical rain and sounds of the jungle.
