The three-kilometre fortifications was divided up by fivegates, of which the Gate of Our Lady is preserved. The double wall tierwas reconstructed into its baroque shape in the 17 th century. The moathas been adapted into a park.A Jewish cemetery recalls the existence of a Jewish community. It wasfounded in 1869 and covers an area of 9000 m 2 and there are more thanone thousand tombstones of members of the local Jewish community -among others the parents of Gustav Mahler.
