The chateau, an extensive and numerous complex of buildings belongingto a former Cistercian monastery, is now the property of Dr.Radoslav Kinsk˘. The baroque bridge over the Sázava, originating from1760, leads to the chateau. It is decorated with eight statues of thesaints. The former building of the abbey and the part of monastery wherepermanent museum exhibitions are situated at present were built in theGothic style. In the building of the prelate you can see the Museum ofBooks and K. F. Töpfer’s huge fresco covers the whole ceiling of its mainhall. The agricultural buildings of the first chateau courtyard are built inbaroque style. The former Gothic Church of the Assumption of theVirgin, which was rebuilt in the Baroque Gothic by Santini, has rich interiordecorations. Santini also reconstructed the decagonal ten-sided ”wellchapel”. There was a 35m deep well as early as at the end of the 13thcentury. The palace gained its present shape after 1784 when the monasterywas burnt down and then dissolved by Emperor Josef II’s edict andrebuilt into a chateau. The derelict baroque Lower Cemetery, also built by the architect Santini, makes an imposing impression. At its centre is the Statue of the Angelof the Last Judgement. The works of participants of international sculptural symposia are scatteredthroughout the individual town quarters. Thus, a gallery with morethan 80 wooden statues has been created.through the reconstruction of a medieval fortress originating fromthe 14 th century.Museum of Books - Zámek (palace), tel. +420 566 625 370Museum collections show the development of European book cultureand book printing (part of Prague National Museum’s library).
