In a picturesque creek of the Sázava River under the railway station inVilémovice is the so-called Sunny Creek. A Czech writer of books forthe youth, Jaroslav Foglar (nicknamed Hawk), a long-time leader of theJunák (Scout) organisation, often came here with his unit from theyear 1925 and the name comes from him. His most famous book ”Ho‰iod Bobfií fieky” (Boys from the Beaver River) was written here. Many architectural elements are preserved - a cylindricaltower, a Renaissance loggia, and two gates. The museum has had itspremises in the castle since 1938. Its collections (archaeology, crafts,ethnography, arms, and numismatics) are installed in historical showcasesin a manner common at the time when they were made - in 1911.You can see temporary exhibitions of paintings and photographs in themuseum gallery throughout the year. Occasional fencing, theatrical andmusical performances take place in the castle.WORTH SEEINGChfienovice Castle overhangs on a rocky point at the confluence of theJestfiebnice and Sázava Rivers, above the railroad through the Sázavaregion. Only a round tower with thick walls and remainders of the othercastle buildings remain from quite a large castle built between 1289 and1318.Pavlov - This village is famous for its two glass furnaces (Svatojánskáand Hanibalovská) from 1826, though today obsolete. Afterwards onlya grinding shop remained. On that day Queen Constance, the widow of Pfiemysl Otakar I,gained a dowry, part of which was the Budûjovice region.The trading community of Moravské Budûjovice was promoted to townstatus probably during the reign of the King Pfiemysl Otakar II in the secondhalf of the 13 th century. King Vladislav II Jagelonsk˘ acknowledged allexisting privileges and gave the town an emblem and seal in 1498.In 1522 the Wallensteins bought the town. The town developed quicklyduring their reign. Zdenûk of Wallenstein took part in the EstatesUprising and the Emperor Ferdinand II confiscated his properties andin 1626 transferred them in the same year to Colonel Hannibal of Schaumburgin return for his military services. His successor Henry RudolfSchaumburk decided to build his manor house here. In 1666 the constructionof the chateau began.Another lord of the manor was Count Francis Wenceslas Wallis. Hisgrandson Josef held posts in the governing body of the Austrian monarchy,including Minister of Finance. Joseph Wallis is buried under the altarpresbytery of the church of St. Giles in Moravské Budûjovice.The Wallis family owned the town until 1848. After serfdom was abolishedthey became the owners of a country estate. In 1928 the manor transferredto a niece of Josef Wallis, Countess Marie Anna Salmová, marriedas Schaffgotschová. In 1945 the manor was confiscated and a year later30
the chateau, courtyard and farm buildings were given by the Ministry ofAgriculture to the town to establish a museum.SIGHTSCylindrical rotunda - the charnel house from the 13 th century is theoldest building in the city. It was adapted to its present form at the beginningof the 18 th century. The fresco on the ceiling called ”The LastJudgement” is dated 1726.The Parish Church of St. Giles was built on the remains of a churchnoted in 1240. The church was originally built without side naves; it hada wooden ceiling and a woodenbell-tower on the west side. A cemeteryenclosed with a wall alsobelonged to the church. A Viennesepainter, Ignác Dullinger,painted the altar painting ofSt. Giles in 1851.There are only few records onthe Chapel of St. Anne; there arealso different opinions on thedate of its construction, whichrange from the 13 th to the 15 thcenturies. According to legendthe body of the Czech KingPfiemysl Otakar II was kept overnightin the chapel in 1297 whenit was carried from Znojmo toPrague (Pfiemysl Otakar II died on 26 th August 1278 on the ”Moravian Field”).Terezie Polyxena, the widow of Václav Renalt of Schaumburk, builtthe Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk in 1713. Two bells are preserved inside - the first dating from 1432 andweighing 300 kg, and the other from 1535 and weighing 1,700 kg.
