Course DescriptionsAviationAV101A Private Pilot Flight Laboratory I, 3 cr.Primary flight instruction in the basics of flying, leads to earning aPrivate Pilot Certificate from the FAA. The student will complete aminimum of 40 flight hours. Prerequisite: Second Class FAAMedical Certificate.AV102A Private Pilot Ground School, 4 cr.Ground school instruction in the fundamentals of aerodynamics,the flight environment, aircraft systems, performance charts,weight and balance, weather and navigation, which prepares thestudent to pass the FAA written examination.AV103A Commercial/Instrument Cross Country FlightLaboratory, 3 cr.The student builds total flight time and increases the solocross-country experience. In the second portion of the courseinitial instrument flight training is begun. Prerequisite: AV101A orhold a Private Pilot Certificate.AV105A Commercial Pilot Ground School, 3 cr.Ground school instruction in instrument procedures, preparingstudents to take the FAA instrument written test. Topics includeinstrument approach procedures, advance weather analysis, airtraffic control procedures and advanced radio navigationprocedures.AV150A Independent Study in Aviation, 1 cr.Independent study or a special project in aviation.AV201A Commercial/Instrument Flight Lab, 3 cr.The student develops increased instrument flying skills. Atcompletion of the course the student should be able to earn theInstrument Commercial Pilot Certificate. Prerequisite: AV103A.AV202A Instrument Ground School, 3 cr.Ground school instruction in advanced aircraft systems;commercial flight maneuvers; review of weather, aircraftperformance, weight and balance, Federal Aviation Regulationsand aerodynamics. Prepares students to take the FAACommercial written test. Prerequisite: AV104A.AV203A Flight Instructor Flight Laboratory, 3 cr.Transition to flying from the right seat in both the basic trainingaircraft and the high performance single engine aircraft. Atcompletion of the course the student takes the FAA flight test.Prerequisite: Commercial Instrument Pilot Certificate.AV204A Flight Instructor Ground School, 3 cr.Preparation for taking the FAA written examination to become acertified flight instructor and instrument flight instructor, as wellas preparation for the FAA oral portion of the required flight testfor these two certificates. Prerequisite: Instrument/CommercialPilot Certificate (Single Engine).AV205A Instrument Flight Instructor Lab, 1 cr.Prepares students to be instrument flight instructors. The studentwill take the FAA flight test for this certificate at completion of thecourse. Prerequisite: Flight Instructor and Instrument PilotCertificates.AV206A Multi-Engine Rating, 3 cr.Ground and flight instruction to prepare the student for transitionto multi-engine aircraft. Theclass includes a historical and contemporary overview ofindustries, professions, processes and social effects of the massmedia.BC112A Public Relations and Marketing, 3 cr.Public relations methods used for effectiveness and the artof persuasion throughout the organization of corporatecommunications.BC131A Play-by-play Training, 1 cr.The basics of sports play-by-play announcing.BC150A Independent Study in Broadcasting, 1 cr.Independent study or a special project in broadcasting.BC200A Sophomore Portfolio, 0 cr.A portfolio completed by each candidate for graduation in theBroadcast Media Specialist program will include a resumé,resumé videotape and/or audio demo tape. Materials areprepared and completed as if the student is applying for a job inthe television or radio industry.BC202A Writing for the Media, 3 cr.An instructional workshop for developing the skills to write foraudio and video. Students will contribute stories to the collegetelevision newscast and possibly supplement the stories withvideo.BC203A Audio Production, 3 cr.Audio production in both radio and television. The main focus ison radio production. Class discussion and lectures focus oncoordination of audio board operation and announcing; creatingand producing radio commercials; familiarizing the student withthe Smartcaster; and following a playlist. Lab exercises helpstudents develop radio control-board skills, production skills,discipline and structure.45
