The <strong>College</strong><strong>Iowa</strong> Vocational-Technical Tuition Grant (IVTG)Need-based grants are available to <strong>Iowa</strong> resident full-timevocational, technical and career option students at the areacommunity colleges.Other Financial AidAssistance to students needing help in financing education isalso provided through veterans’ services, vocational rehabilitation,Job Service, Work Force Investment, and the <strong>Iowa</strong> NationalGuard.ScholarshipsA number of scholarships are available at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong><strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>. An application and information concerningeligibility are available from the institutional advancement officeor the financial aid office. Financial need may be a qualificationfor some scholarships. Other scholarships are available tostudents through local civic and community organizations.Satisfactory Progress ProcedureOnce a student establishes eligibility to participate in thefederal, state and <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> financial aid programs and isawarded funds from these programs, the student agrees to makesatisfactory progress toward the completion of the designatedprogram of study. The college is directed by federal and stategovernments to establish an institutional policy which will monitoracademic progress. Information on the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> policy isavailable from the financial aid office at the Emmetsburg campus.PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR HONORS PROGRAMFreshman applicants to <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> recognized as honorstudents in high school and second year college students whohave a cumulative average of 3.50 or above are invited to bemembers of the Presidential Scholars Program. Membershipguarantees financial assistance through scholarships rangingfrom $100 awards to full tuition reimbursement. Members of theprogram gather periodically during the year to plan and take partin cultural, intellectual and aesthetic activities; are invited tobecome members of the Upper Midwest Honors Council; and arealso advised to register for honors courses which will beidentified as such on their transcripts. Students completing sixhonors courses over the two years will also be recognized asPresidential Scholars at commencement exercises. Somerestrictions apply in this program.STUDENT LIFEThe <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> experience is not by anymeans restricted to the classroom. Students participate in manyco-curricular activities that are very much a part of their learningand growth. Since many of these activities, such as athletics andmusic, have headquarters at the Estherville campus, transportationis provided from the Emmetsburg campus when needed.AthleticsThe athletics program at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> is anintegral part of the total educational program. The programpromotes physical growth and fitness, provides organizedintercollegiate sports competition for student participation andcommunity involvement, and allows a competitive feeling ofachievement through sports participation. Intercollegiateathletics operate through the Estherville campus for students atany campus.Intramural athletics provide organized competition, individualtournaments and outdoor recreation for all students.Opportunities for fun, enjoyment and fellowship throughparticipation in sports activities are sponsored at bothEmmetsburg and Estherville.CommunicationStudents majoring in mass communications — writing, editing,photography, layout — are responsible for the “Spindrift,” thecollege newspaper. All students are invited to participate. Anannual publication, “Prairie Smoke,” features student poetry,short stories, essays, art and photography. All students areinvited to submit work to “Prairie Smoke.”Students interested in speech and debate find opportunities forcompetition with other colleges. Broadcasting students air a dailynews broadcast and a radio music show over a local cabletelevision channel.MusicThe college offers both vocal and instrumental musicorganizations in which students may participate. Among theseare the concert band, stage band, concert choir and swing choir.The college also sponsors invitational swing choir and jazz bandclinics which feature nationally known clinicians.Student OrganizationsThe college encourages students to be active in college clubsand organizations. More than 30 student organizations reflect thewide range of student interest in pre-professional, social andspecial interest groups. A full listing of organizations appears inthe student handbook.Student GovernmentThe Student Senate is the governing body for students at thecollege. Through its work, students are provided an opportunity toparticipate in the operation of the college. The senate’sobjectives are to provide comprehensive activity programs for thestudent body, to address issues brought before it by the studentsrepresented, to encourage interaction between students at thevarious campuses, to provide leadership in issues of citizenshipand student rights, and to administer the student activity fee (withthe consent of the board of trustees of the college).STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIESAcademic institutions exist for the transmission of knowledge,the pursuit of truth, the development of students and thegeneral well-being of society. Free inquiry and free expressionare indispensable to the attainment of these goals.Freedom to teach and freedom to learn are inseparable facetsof academic freedom. The freedom to learn depends uponappropriate opportunities and conditions in the classroom, on thecampus and in the larger community.
