The <strong>College</strong>All students applying for admission to credit programs at thecollege must submit a completed <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> application form, atranscript of high school work or GED certification and officialtranscripts sent directly from each postsecondary institution ofhigher education attended. Participation in the American <strong>College</strong>Test (ACT) program and submission of scores is recommended.Nursing applicants must submit ACT program scores, threereferences and meet with nursing faculty for an interview. Someprograms require medical examinations, assessment beforeadmission and/or advance fee deposits.Applicants will be notified of their admission to the college bythe dean of enrollment management.ReadmissionStudents who have formerly attended <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Community</strong><strong>College</strong> and who wish to return after an absence of a term (otherthan the summer session) should apply for readmission at theadmission office of the campus they plan to enter. Studentsreadmitted after an absence will be required to fulfill currentgraduation requirements.Transfer StudentsTransfer students must complete all admission requirementsincluding submission of official transcripts directly from everypostsecondary school or college attended whether or not creditwas earned.International StudentsA student from another country must complete a specialapplication form which is available from the admission office.Official transcripts of all secondary school and higher educationrecords must be sent directly to the admission office. Notarizedtranslations must be included for non-English language records.Transcripts must include specific dates of school attendance,courses taken during each year of attendance, grades and thegrading scale used. The college may use the services of aservice bureau to help in evaluating transcripts from othercountries; charges are paid by the applicant. Students whosenative language is not English must submit evidence of theirEnglish proficiency by a score of 500 or above on the Test ofEnglish as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in its paper form. A scoreof 173 or more is required on the computer version of the TOEFL.International students must submit evidence of financial abilityto meet college and living expenses during the first year ofattendance. A financial status questionnaire, available from theadmission office, must be completed before an immigration I-20form will be issued. Visa regulations of the U S Department ofImmigration and Naturalization must be followed.Admission-Continuing EducationAdmission to continuing education programs is varied anflexible. Adults are encouraged to enroll regardless of pasteducational achievement or number of years of formal education.Enrollment in adult basic education, high school completion,general adult education, adult vocational supplementaryeducation, adult vocational short courses or professionalcontinuing education is accomplished by contacting thecontinuing education office at 712/362-7231 or 800/252-5664.Residency RequirementsStudents enrolling at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> areclassified as residents or non-residents for admission, tuition andfee purposes. Each student must declare residency correctlyunder applicable rules and laws of the state of <strong>Iowa</strong> as well asthe policies of the college board of trustees.Students who have been classified as non-residents for thispurpose and who believe they should be eligible for residenttuition, may apply for reconsideration of their cases. The directorof records and registration may require written documents,affidavits and other evidence considered necessary to establishthe residency of the student. This may include rent receipts, voterregistration information, driver’s license, motor vehicleregistration, or other materials. Residence for collegeenrollment and fee purposes may be different from residence forother purposes. The burden of establishing exemption fromnon-resident status is with the student.A decision by the director of records and registration which thestudent feels is incorrect may be appealed to the Academic ReviewCommittee, which acts as the appeals body for residency questions.Refugees are accepted into this country by the U. S. governmentand into the state with the recommendation of the governor. Theyare placed into a community with the full intention ofestablishing residency and with no intention of returning to theirnative country. They are charged resident tuition.Further information on residency classification is availablefrom the records and registration office.ADVANCE REGISTRATION ANDORIENTATIONAdvance RegistrationRegistration for new freshmen takes place at <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong>during the summer. <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> recognizes that the hectic fallregistration procedure can be an unsettling, bewilderingexperience for a new student. The college has established anearly registration date when family and friends may accompanythe student. Processes of advising and registration areaccomplished in a convenient manner.New Student OrientationAt the advance registration and orientation sessions, eachstudent is assigned an academic advisor. Many students come to<strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> with a particular program of study in mind; thesestudents are assigned advisors in those programs. Other studentsare undecided about their future. In such cases, students areencouraged to access the Career Resource Centers located inEstherville and Emmetsburg. Career interest assessment,career resource libraries and individual appointments withadvisors/counselors may help clarify academic and career goals.Orientation continues during the first day of the term. Paymentof tuition and fees is the final step in registration. The orientationprocess continues through the term and ends with scheduling,registration and payment of tuition and fees for the next term. Allnew freshmen who register as full-time day students mustregister for Orientation to <strong>College</strong> (if offered).3
