The 3,800-sq. ft. <strong>Maytag</strong>-equpped coin store in located along busy Highway 18 in Mason City, Iowa.Ron Drewelow got his start in the coin laundry businessfour years ago when he purchased an older store on theeast side of Mason City, a diversified community of 30,000in north-central Iowa. His first action was to replace small,inefficient front-load washers with new energy-efficient,larger capacity <strong>Maytag</strong> equipment. He also spruced up thestore’s interior, hired an attendant and banned smokinginside the store.“For a business that was barely making it, I was amazedwith how these changes quickly turned the store around,with customers soon flocking to the store and commentingon what a great place it was to do their laundry,” saidDrewelow.With this success well established, Drewelow began tosearch for a second location. “I realized that Mason Citywas significantly underserved when it came to quality coinlaundries for the size of the market,” he explained. “I spenta lot of time and carefully researched properties and finallychose what I thought was the perfect site.”The new 3,800-sq. ft. Leisure Wash <strong>Maytag</strong>-equippedstore is located along busy Highway 18 on the west edgeof Mason City. The area has heavy retail nearby, with aTarget, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, Wal-Mart, and severalother major businesses within a mile. The icing on the cakeis that the store is located directly across from the North3


Iowa Fairgrounds, where events takeplace on a regular basis that drawthousands of people, including attimes hundreds of people with pilesof soiled laundry who use campingareas within the fairgrounds.Drewelow built the store fromthe ground up. It features largefloor-to-ceiling windows, skid-freetile flooring, two convenient entrancesand ample off-street parkingat the front, side and rear of thestore. In addition to the coin laundryequipment, the store features10 tanning beds, with room to addseven more as the business grows.“A significant number of ourcoin laundry users also use the tanningfacility,” said Drewelow. “It’s agreat way to draw customers in, andgives them the opportunity to tanand wash at the same time, which isa real time saver.”Drewelow worked with <strong>To</strong>ddStoltz and the team at BDS <strong>Laundry</strong>Systems of St. Paul, Minnesota,the <strong>Maytag</strong> <strong>Commercial</strong> <strong>Laundry</strong>distributor serving the area, ondesigning and equipping the store.BDS also provided assistance witha demographic survey of the area,floor plan layout and consultation.“The expertise that BDS brings tothe table was really valuable ingetting my new store off theground,” he pointed out.The store opened in May 2007,and business has been buildingsteadily ever since. “We’re drawinga lot of traffic from surroundingtowns, as well as travelersoff of nearby Interstate 35,” saidDrewelow. “When customers comein the front door, they’re trulyimpressed by the size, quality andAt the front of the store, there is a 12-bay soap vending machine and changemachine. The store also offersdrycleaning drop-off and pick-up through anagreement with a local company.Saturday and Sunday are the store’s busiestdays, with about 70 percent of the normal businessdone on the weekends. “There are timeswhen every washer and dryer is in operation,with people waiting in line,” he owner said.Targeted radio commercials and newspaperadvertising were used during the store’s firsttwo weeks of operation. Drewelow also hasdistributed flyers at area tourist locations to boostbusiness, and plans to install a pole sign in front ofthe business.Customers are greeted by a large attendant stationat the front of the store, where the change machineand soap vending machine are located. Storeattendants also manage the walk-in traffic of theadjacent tanning operation. A closed-circuit surveillancesystem keeps a watchful eye on the operation.The store is designed with ample room for expansionof the laundry and tanning facilities. Thereis also a 1,400-sq. ft. area at the back of the storethat features a separate entrance where Drewelowplans to add a snack bar, coffee and ice cream businessin the coming months. The lot is large enoughat the back of the store where self-storage rentalunits can be added in the future.7
