JOB417Metro Orange LineExtensionby Andy ThompsonThe Metro Orange Line Extension is moving at full speed. With nearly 100 workers on site, work has commenced in everysegment of the four mile project.Grading and base paving for the bus way is complete in eight of the 10 segments and the bike path is following right behindit. Steiny, our electrical subcontractor, continues to install the electrical and communications duct bank, as well as the conduitand foundations for the bike path lighting. The Lassen Street Bridge was poured and stressed in June and the falsework has been modified to build the lightweightconcrete architectural features. Work has also started at the LA River and Santa Susana Creek Bridges. Anderson Drillinghas completed the CIDH piles and BEC structure crews are currently building the abutments. The girders for both bridgesare being constructed by Coreslab and are expected to arrive in early September.MSE wall construction has begun on approaches to the Lassen Bridge and is expected to finish in September. We have encountered somechallenges with these walls but are working with the Reinforced Earth Company and Cemex. The Type 5 retaining wall at the “Pinch Point”along the bus way is nearly complete. This wall is a result of value engineering that allowed us to replace 600 feet of two-sided MSE walls witha single cast-in-place retaining wall.Demolition and construction has begun in five of the seven city street crossings. This has proven to be the most difficult and time-consumingportion of the project to design. While the right-turn pocket work started in mid-May, the main portion of the crossing work is just gettingstarted. With the full-weekend closures still to come, this work is going to be a race to the finish. The Roscoe and Nordhoff Stations are well underway, with Sherman Way, Canoga and Chatsworth following closely behind. The stationplatforms consist of CIDH piles, grade beams, structural lower slabs, architectural upper slabs, structural steel canopies and hundreds ofelectrical and communication conduits. The structural steel canopies are being fabricated by JMA in Pomona and are scheduled to arrive at theRoscoe Station in early September. There is a lot of work to get done over the next seven months but with hard work, coordination and cooperation, there will be busses on theOrange Line Extension by Summer 2012.LA River Bridge piles.Lassen Bridge architectural feature.Roscoe Station North.Segment 7 bus way.Segment 9 MSE wall excavation.6 THE BRUT FORCE | 18th Edition | September 2011

JOB421Passons Blvd. GradeSeparationby Bob BraunConstruction of the Passons Blvd. Grade Separation Project, which began in December 2010, is broken down into four majorstages. We are currently completing Stage 1, which includes the relocation of the sewer, storm drain, and water lines, as well asthird party utility relocation of gas, power, and communication lines. The installation of the county and city sewer lines is finishedand the construction of the reinforced concrete box (RCB) is also wrapping up.There were a number of challenges we had to overcome during the construction of the 12 foot x 12 foot RCB. About 750 feetof the box was constructed adjacent to the live railroad track. Angelo Veronesi and foremen John Bearer and Jeremy Dobynswere in charge of making sure the excavation and installation of the shoring in this critical area was done correctly and safely.Approximately 28,800 square feet of slide rail shoring was installed, one of the biggest slide rail installations for Trench Shoring. The excavations and shoring installation also had to be done around an existing storm drain box that was in use. Again this created issues of how todemo the existing box and construct the new one without disrupting the flow. To accomplish this work during the rainy season, a rigorous schedulewas set to demolish the existing box (see photo #1), grade, and place a 4” thick waste slab (see photo #2), so construction of the new box couldstart (see photo #3). Ron Barthelme, Kenny Hornbeck, Jess Gardner, Benny Anguiano, and Tim Gifford were all involved in the construction of thenew box. The new box is 1,481 feet long and contains about 2,700 cubic yards of concrete.During Stage 1, we closed down Passons Blvd. and are constructing a temporary shoofly track for BNSF Railroad. Installation of the storm drain pipeand water lines is also ongoing.Stage 2 work will start once the train traffic is switched over to the temporary shoofly track. This work will consist of excavation and installation ofthe shoring on the south side of the site. Once this is complete, we will construct a three-track railroad bridge over the newly lowered portion ofPassons Blvd. Once the bridge is complete and train traffic is switched over to the new bridge, Stage 3 can begin. This work includes the excavationof the north side of the site and the construction of the new Passons Blvd. and Rivera Road as well as all the roadway improvements. When the newPassons Blvd. grade separation is open to traffic, we will start Stage 4, which will close Serapis Ave. at the grade crossing and perform minor streetimprovements in the area.Throughout Stage 1 of construction, we have been coordinating with numerous regulatory agencies as well as a number of third party utilitycompanies in an effort to complete the work. We have also had to deal with a number of delays by Verizon, Southern California Edison, and BNSF.Brutoco and the City of Pico Rivera are currently working together to mitigate these delays and are now accelerating the schedule. The project isscheduled to be completed in July 2012.Photo #1: Penhall demolishes the existing box.John Bearer, Valente Quintero, Rafael Cabral, and Brian Pesanielloinstalling slide rail shoring at the existing RCB.Photo #2: Seal slab for new box construction.Photo #3: Poured section of box invert on seal slab.Forming the box invert.September 2011 | 18th Edition | THE BRUT FORCE 7

WELLNESS PROGRAMby Sharee’ AndradeAt Brutoco we are family. Family means that we need to make sure that everyone is healthy andtaken care of. One of the ways that we ensure employee wellness is through our safety program, butwe also want to support healthy lifestyles beyond the worksite or office.Brutoco is taking steps to develop a wellness program that will include a Health and Wellness Fair atthe upcoming employee picnic, monthly Top Health paycheck handouts, healthy tid-bits, corporatediscounts at gyms, stretch and flex curriculum, future Brut Force articles, and much more.We welcome your thoughts on the resources we can provide to improve your wellness. With that, you want to make sure you are not only maximizing your walletBUT your nutrition as well. Here are a few samples that you can enhance your “brown bag” lunch:• Cold Cheese and Fruit Kit: Make your own “Lunchables” by filling a reusable container with assorted cheeseslices, easy-to-eat fruit like apple slices and grapes, and whole wheat crackers.• Fish in a Pinch: Work a fish serving into your week by adding tuna or salmon toyour green salad, pasta salad, or sandwich.• Pasta Salad Prep: Make cold pasta salad with leftover pasta shapes from last night. It makes a great grab-and-go lunch the next day.• Wrap It Up: Make your sandwich wrap the night before, using a whole grain flour tortilla and spreads like green or sun-driedtomato pesto, olive tapenade, or honey mustard. Layer it with slices of lean meat or cheese, assorted vegetables, tomato, onion, and lettuce.STRETCH AND FLEX AT THE FONTANA OFFICEby Laurence FortinOn July 25, Brutoco administrative employees in the Fontana office started their first week ofstretch and flex exercises. This was initiated as part of our overall health and wellness programthat we started this year to benefit our employees and support behavior that reduces healthrisks. Management wanted to start this effort at the Fontana office to examine the pros andcons firsthand. From personal experience, I can say that I have noticed a big difference between startingmy day after stretching compared to not stretching. You really can feel a difference in youroverall physical energy and mental focus. It was also great to hear Mike Bergeon yell wordsof encouragement while we were on the slab in front of his office. Thanks for the motivation,Mike!Sessions are held daily at 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. in front of the shop, so if you’re in the main office plan on joiningone and get your day started right with a good stretch.12 THE BRUT FORCE | 18th Edition | September 2011

THE SAFETY ZONEby Laurence FortinThink Safe, Be Safe!Dee Lewis at Job 417 won our new safety slogancontest. The winning slogan was selected by theBrutoco Safety Committee from 34 entries byBrutoco employees and their family members.work force and the company’s bottom line.Motor vehicle safetyReducing motor vehicle accidents continues tobe a major focus for companies in our industry. In 2008, there were 10.2 million vehicle accidents nationwide, andconcerns about distracted drivers are rising. With over 100 Brutocovehicles on the road and over 50% of our drivers commuting twohours or more per day, fleet safety is critical for the well-being of ourBrutoco has made reducing the number of vehicle accidents a major safety goal because we have been affected bydistracted driving and other preventable types of accidents. As of August, we have had eight motor vehicle accidents thisyear, compared to three at this time last year. There are several likely factors for these accidents -- fatigue, number of miles driven daily, distracted driving, discourteousCalifornia drivers, road and weather conditions. No one has the silver bullet on how to stop motor vehicle accidents (shortof taking their vehicles away) so a multi-faceted approach seems in order.Last year we conducted company-wide defensive driver training online and that seemed to have some success in reinforcinggood driving habits. This year, management has elected to try the “How Is MyDriving” decal program to see if this has an effect on thebehavior of our drivers. Maybe it will cause us all to pay moreattention to our driving habits. The decals have the vehiclenumber and a number to call for reporting purposes. When acall is received, it is reviewed by management and a incidentreview may be held with the employee and their supervisorfor corrective action, if needed. We also conducted a driver survey with the help of Safety Committee co-chair Juan Gaspar. This was done to reach outto our employees and get input on driving habits and policies. We had very good participation in this anonymous onlinesurvey and received very candid feedback. We asked what our drivers thought we can do to reduce vehicle accidents andreceived a large number of suggestions about additional policies, procedures, equipment and training. This input is muchappreciated and will be further discussed for possible implementation.Your feedback is always needed and appreciated, so if you think there is a better approach to address the rising number ofvehicle accidents, please contact Joanne Schultz, Laurence Fortin or the Safety Committee and provide your input so wecan continue to improve the safety of our employees and the general public.14 THE BRUT FORCE | 18th Edition | September 2011

SAVE 6 - BY CARPOOLINGby Sharee’ AndradeBrutoco currently is building several jobs that are more than a two hour drive fromthe Fontana office in traffic. Several employees have used this as an opportunityto SAVE 6. We are aware that many of you carpool to reduce the overall costof daily commuting as well as saving time by using the HOV or diamond lanes. We would like to share a few reasons this is working well for our drivers and forBrutoco’s bottom line.Time & EnergyUse of the HOV or diamond lane can save significant amounts of time wasted sitting in traffic. Chris Camping reports thathe saves 20-30 minutes on each leg of his commute to and from Job 417 by carpooling, and on Thursdays and Fridays, itcan be up to 45-60 minutes. He estimates that on average he saves about an hour a day on his drive. Some of the time coworkers spend together in the car is usually spent discussing work, so you also SAVE 6 as you planwork and discuss issues while you are commuting.Vehicle ExpenseRob Fryan and Juan Gaspar are carpooling on a daily basis from RanchoCucamonga to Job 420 Tillman. Here is rough calculation on the money savedon gas for their drive:240 trips x 126 miles roundtrip = 30,240 miles1,512 gallons of gas (at 20 mpg) x $3.69/gal = $5,579Andy Thompson and Chris Camping are carpooling five days a week fromOntario to Job 417 Orange Line Extension.240 trips x 150 miles roundtrip = 36,000 miles1,800 gallons of gas (at 20 mpg) x $3.69/gal = $6,642Josh De Smet and Jose Muhr also carpool several times a week from Chinoto Job 417.Jose Muhr and Josh De Smet100 trips x 140 miles roundtrip = 14,000 miles700 gallons of gas (at 20 mpg) x $3.69/gal = $2,583You can see that just these three carpools save Brutoco nearly $15,000 per year just on gas.The true savings is probably more than double that amount when vehicle wear and team, maintenance and depreciationare considered. If the federal mileage reimbursement rate of $.55 per mile is used to calculate vehicle expenses, the savingsfor these three carpools is $80,240.If you’re interested in starting a carpool, ask around your jobsite. Consider meeting up at a park andride lot near your home, or along your travel route. The savings may surprise you!September 2011 | 18th Edition | THE BRUT FORCE 15

Brutoco Bridge Movie Rating Scale:5 Bridges – Definitely a classic. Worth paying full price at thetheater, or maybe even seeing again4 Bridges – A good solid movie, keeps your attention, worththe money (tickets and popcorn).3 Bridges – Okay to see at the discount theater on a rainy day, otherwise wait for it to come out on DVD.2 Bridges – Not worth your hard earned cash at the theater.Maybe a rental if there is nothing better at Blockbuster.1 Bridge – Pass on it. Wait until next week’s new releases.BridgeScore:Just Out at the Theater:Cowboys and AliensDaniel Craig and Harrison Ford and a great supporting cast (includingthe Apache Nation) take on nasty aliens in the Wild West. A littlepredictable, and even a little corny at times, but nevertheless greatescapism at the movie theater (after all, isn’t that what we go to themovies for anyway?). Craig is intense (and constantly flexing) andHarrison Ford seems like he just stepped out of an Indiana Jonesmovie. The aliens have nasty three fingered hands coming out of theirchests -- covered with slime -- and they have cool spaceships butthey are no match for our crusty bunch of locals. Good entertainmentbut there is no deep meaning to thismovie.Rating -- I give it 3.75 Bridges outof 5THE RATCHETOn DVD(actually saw it on cable since my Blockbuster closed)The Adjustment BureauMatt Damon, as a New York congressman, meets the girl of hisdreams (Emily Blunt) and all is good until the men in black suitsand hats (that allow them to travel through time and space)decide to “adjust” his future and force him to walk away fromher. This Phillip Dick novel deals with the dilemma between freewill and predestination. The sci-fi romantic thriller takes place andwas filmed on location in New York City. After a chance reconnection by the two isfollowed by another break, the girl decidesto marry somebody else. It all works outin the end, but I think the writers ran outof good ideas and the ending is a bit goofy.Fortunately, you can’t spend $10 to see itin the theater anymore but I think it wasworth $2.99 to see it on cable.Rating -- 2.75 Bridges out of 5.BridgeScore:by Mike BergeonThe ”Brutoco Beach Boys” (Steve Gonzalez, Mike Ucovich)-- why is it Mike Ucovich always gets to work on a beach job?Hey Josh, are you ready for that Quality Taurus yet?Did you know that Chris Camping and Harold Camping are related?
