15 Years one world foundation free education unit Sri Lanka

Schon bei der Ankunft, damals beim ersten Besuch
der one world foundation Mitte der 1990er Jahre,
empfand ich so stark wie nie zuvor an einem Ort, das
Gefühl „angekommen“ zu sein. Eine innere Ruhe
stellte sich ein – und gleichzeitig größte Lust, alle
Antennen auszufahren, um zu begreifen, was denn
hier so magisch sei. Ist es die überwältigende, alle
Sinne ansprechende Schönheit der Landschaft, der
Tiere, der Architektur und Kunst? Ist es der feine
Charme aller singhalesischen Mitarbeiter/innen? Oder
die spürbare Balance des sinnvollen Gebens und Nehmens,
das Ermöglichen einer Schulbildung von Kindern
und Jugendlichen, in dem man selbst zur Ruhe
kommt?
All das zusammen macht die Einzigartigkeit – die
Magie – der one world foundation aus, die Kathrin
Messner und Joseph Ortner vor 15 Jahren gegründet
haben. Ihr weitsichtiges und präzises Engagement für
Bildung gepaart mit einer enormen ästhetischen Konsequenz
sind omnipräsent – in der Schule genauso
wie in der Bogenvillya. Joseph Beuys’ Idee der „Sozialen
Plastik“, der gesellschaftsverändernden Kunst
wird hier täglich und höchst erfolgreich gelebt.
Mittlerweile planen wir den fünften Besuch. Unser
viereinhalbjähriger Sohn muss gar nicht lange nachdenken,
wenn man ihn nach seinen Eindrücken fragt:
Chamäleon, Wasserschildkröte, Waran, Elefant,
schwimmen lernen, Nandanes selbstgebasteltes Spielzeug,
lustige Leute und sooo ein großer Tisch, an dem
alle essen.
Mit steter Bewunderung für das von Kathrin und
Joseph Geschaffene und Kathrins unermüdliche Weiterführung
– und in immerwährender Freundschaft.

The first time I visited one world foundation in
the mid 1990s, I remember feeling an immediate
notion of “having arrived”. It was much stronger
than anything I’d ever experienced in other places.
I felt an inner peace and an equally strong inclination
to extend my antennae and find out about the
magic of this place. Is it the overwhelming beauty of
the landscape, the animals, the architecture and the
art and its appeal to the senses? Is it the delicate
charm of the Singhalese staff? Or the palpable balance
of a give and take which makes perfect sense
as it provides children and adolescents with an education
and the visitor with an opportunity to find
peace?
All of this adds up to the unique flair – the magic
– of one world foundation which was established 15
years ago by Kathrin Messner and Joseph Ortner.
Their forward looking and particular commitment
to education coupled with an enormous consistency
in terms of the aesthetics apparent in every little
detail is ubiquitous – both at the school as well as at
Bogenvillya. Joseph Beuys’ idea of the “Social Sculpture”,
i.e. of art changing society, not only takes
place on an everyday basis but does so successfully.
In the meantime we’re planning our fifth visit.
When we ask our four year old son what he likes
best about it, he lists his favourite things without
even thinking about it: chameleon, turtle, goanna,
elephant, learning to swim, Nandane’s hand-made
toys, really nice people and such a looong table
where everyone sits down to eat.
Our admiration for what Kathrin and Joseph
have created, and for Kathrin’s relentless efforts to
carry it on is as ongoing as our ever lasting friendship.
