The important implication <strong>of</strong> thislatter finding is that depending on <strong>the</strong> price<strong>of</strong> fertilizer, it may be economical forfarmers to recycle <strong>the</strong>ir top-cross hybridsra<strong>the</strong>r than planting landraces.In a trial on an experiment station inZimbabwe, Shumba (1990) evaluated <strong>the</strong>effects <strong>of</strong> seed recycling on <strong>the</strong> performance<strong>of</strong> two three-way cross hybrids (PNR473,R201) and one improved OPV (KahalariEarly Pearl). In both high-yielding and lowyieldingenvironments, <strong>the</strong> hybridsoutyielded <strong>the</strong> OPV. After one year <strong>of</strong> recycling, yields in F2 hybrid plants decreased by7.4%; surprisingly, yields in recycled OPV plants decreased by about <strong>the</strong> same amount(7.8%) (Table 20, Figure 6). This unexpected result may have been attributable tomanagement problems with <strong>the</strong> trial.
