the bulletinAuthor Inspires CommunityWes Moore, author of the New York Timesbestseller The Other Wes Moore and hostof “Beyond Belief” on the Oprah WinfreyNetwork, spoke at Assembly on Feb. 6.The Other Wes Moore was requiredreading for the Nobles community. It centerson the fates of two young men raisedin Baltimore—Moore’s own story and thatof another man, also named Wes Moore.The other Wes Moore was convicted ofmurdering an off-duty police officer justas the author was preparing to travel toOxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.Wes MooreLike the incarcerated Moore, theauthor, too, was once on a dangerous path.“I found myself hurting people who lovedme to impress people who couldn’t careless about me,” he said. Moore said that hefirst felt handcuffs on his wrists at age 11.Moore told the Nobles communitythat each story could have been theother’s story. “It’s about the decisionswe make,” he said. Moore recountedthe challenges of his time at a privateschool and the tenets of leadership thathe learned at military school. “Expecta-tions matter. . . . Potential is universal.Opportunity is not,” he said.“Even our worst decisions do notseparate us from the circle of humanity,”Moore told students in a post-Assemblyquestion-and-answer session.When a student asked what Mooreexpected to be doing in five years, he saidthat the fight for educational equalitywould remain central to his work. “Thebiggest factor in social mobility iseducation. . . . I also believe in drillingdown and doing the work—but keepingyour head up so that you are ableto see opportunities.”Moore told the story of a WestPoint colonel who was dying of cancer.The colonel addressed the studentssaying, “When it’s time for you toleave, make sure it mattered that youwere ever even here.”Moore said that if he had limitlessresources to improve educationalequality, he would completely restructureand extend the school year. He added thathe would also help in the early identificationof skills to give students careeroptions, including work in the trades.Moore’s time is split between work inmedia, advocacy and education. “Educationis at the top,” he said. South African Friends Visit NoblesNobles welcomed 10 members of KliptownYouth Program (KYP) from South Africafor a two-week cultural exchange in January2013. The group lived with Nobles hostfamilies, attended classes, conducteddance workshops, and immersed themselvesin the Nobles community. Thiswas the group’s first visit to Nobles—formany of them, it was their first trip to theUnited States.The Nobles/KYP relationship beganmore than a decade ago, when studentstraveled to South Africa during March breakfor service work. KYP provides educationalsupport through tutoring, arts and athleticsto 400 students in Kliptown, South Africa.Through conversations in the alcoves,the Arts Center and the Castle, Noblesstudents gained new perspectives andlearned more about South African culture.KYP performed and conducted dance workshops,teaching students gumboot dancing,a tradition that began in the diamondmines. Thulani Madondo, director of KYPand 2012 CNN Top 10 Hero, shared thatgumboot dancing developed as a meansof communication for miners who spokeseveral different languages. The dynamicgroup made music through stomping, clapping,and singing. During their dance lesson,they reminded students to have fun, smile,and be loud. Gumboot dancing has evolvedinto an art and a source of entertainment inSouth Africa.Madondo has traveled in the UnitedStates before, but he says that it’s specialto share the experience with his team.Kliptown Youth Program also performed atarea schools, including Milton Academy,Dedham Country Day, Epiphany School,Lilla G. Frederick School and other venuesto raise funds for their program.The visit also reconnected KYP-affiliatedNobles graduates and their families duringan evening of storytelling and performances.Julia Weber ’11 with her sister Hannah’09, both of whom traveled to Kliptown in2006, shared that that trip “truly changedour lives and the way we view the world.”Both sisters were inspired to lead a fundraisinginitiative through One Laptop PerChild (OLPC) to purchase 100 XO laptopsfor Kliptown students.“The community members from KYPhave hosted well over 100 members of theNobles community, so it was gratifying to,in a small way, return the favor,” says JohnGifford, head of the Middle School and assistanthead of school. “Perhaps even moreimportant, we were successful in meetingour goals of expanding their group offriends and supporters in the United Statesand raising vital funds for KYP.”Members of KYP demonstrate gumboot dancing in Morrison Forum.student’s journey tofind a date for a LunarNew Year/Valentine’sDay festivity; theNobleman announcedits Valentine’s Dayissue by interviewingstudents/facultymembers about theirfavorite Valentine’sDay memory; andlast but not least, thecommunity showedlots of love to the girlsvarsity squash team,which announced theywon the ISL for thefirst time.CinematographyDuring the annualvisual arts Assembly,the faculty presented“The Power of Cinema”and gave students anew outlook on howmovies are made, justin time for the Oscars.They discussed threeimportant elements:color, space and light.Students watchedclips from The Wizardof Oz, Dark Night andPirates of the Caribbean,to compare color,space and light inspring 2013 Nobles 11
