South African Friends Visit <strong>Noble</strong>s<strong>Noble</strong>s welcomed 10 members of KliptownYouth Program (KYP) from South Africafor a two-week cultural exchange in January2013. The group lived with <strong>Noble</strong>s hostfamilies, attended classes, conducteddance workshops, <strong>and</strong> immersed <strong>the</strong>mselvesin <strong>the</strong> <strong>Noble</strong>s community. Thiswas <strong>the</strong> group’s first visit to <strong>Noble</strong>s—formany of <strong>the</strong>m, it was <strong>the</strong>ir first trip to <strong>the</strong>United States.The <strong>Noble</strong>s/KYP relationship beganmore than a decade ago, when studentstraveled to South Africa during March breakfor service work. KYP provides educationalsupport through tutoring, arts <strong>and</strong> athleticsto 400 students in Kliptown, South Africa.Through conversations in <strong>the</strong> alcoves,<strong>the</strong> Arts Center <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Castle, <strong>Noble</strong>sstudents gained new perspectives <strong>and</strong>learned more about South African culture.KYP performed <strong>and</strong> conducted dance workshops,teaching students gumboot dancing,a tradition that began in <strong>the</strong> diamondmines. Thulani Madondo, director of KYP<strong>and</strong> 2012 CNN Top 10 Hero, shared thatgumboot dancing developed as a meansof communication for miners who spokeseveral different languages. The dynamicgroup made music through stomping, clapping,<strong>and</strong> singing. During <strong>the</strong>ir dance lesson,<strong>the</strong>y reminded students to have fun, smile,<strong>and</strong> be loud. Gumboot dancing has evolvedinto an art <strong>and</strong> a source of entertainment inSouth Africa.Madondo has traveled in <strong>the</strong> UnitedStates before, but he says that it’s specialto share <strong>the</strong> experience with his team.Kliptown Youth Program also performed atarea schools, including Milton Academy,Dedham Country Day, Epiphany <strong>School</strong>,Lilla G. Frederick <strong>School</strong> <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r venuesto raise funds for <strong>the</strong>ir program.The visit also reconnected KYP-affiliated<strong>Noble</strong>s graduates <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir families duringan evening of storytelling <strong>and</strong> performances.Julia Weber ’11 with her sister Hannah’09, both of whom traveled to Kliptown in2006, shared that that trip “truly changedour lives <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> way we view <strong>the</strong> world.”Both sisters were inspired to lead a fundraisinginitiative through One Laptop PerChild (OLPC) to purchase 100 XO laptopsfor Kliptown students.“The community members from KYPhave hosted well over 100 members of <strong>the</strong><strong>Noble</strong>s community, so it was gratifying to,in a small way, return <strong>the</strong> favor,” says JohnGifford, head of <strong>the</strong> Middle <strong>School</strong> <strong>and</strong> assistan<strong>the</strong>ad of school. “Perhaps even moreimportant, we were successful in meetingour goals of exp<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>the</strong>ir group offriends <strong>and</strong> supporters in <strong>the</strong> United States<strong>and</strong> raising vital funds for KYP.”Members of KYP demonstrate gumboot dancing in Morrison Forum.student’s journey tofind a date for a LunarNew Year/Valentine’sDay festivity; <strong>the</strong><strong>Noble</strong>man announcedits Valentine’s Dayissue by interviewingstudents/facultymembers about <strong>the</strong>irfavorite Valentine’sDay memory; <strong>and</strong>last but not least, <strong>the</strong>community showedlots of love to <strong>the</strong> girlsvarsity squash team,which announced <strong>the</strong>ywon <strong>the</strong> ISL for <strong>the</strong>first time.CinematographyDuring <strong>the</strong> annualvisual arts Assembly,<strong>the</strong> faculty presented“The Power of Cinema”<strong>and</strong> gave students anew outlook on howmovies are made, justin time for <strong>the</strong> Oscars.They discussed threeimportant elements:color, space <strong>and</strong> light.Students watchedclips from The Wizardof Oz, Dark Night <strong>and</strong>Pirates of <strong>the</strong> Caribbean,to compare color,space <strong>and</strong> light inspring 2013 <strong>Noble</strong>s 11
