The Pennsylvania State UniversityOffi ce <strong>of</strong> <strong>Physical</strong> <strong>Plant</strong>PURPOSEWaste and Recycling <strong>Station</strong><strong>Design</strong> <strong>Guideline</strong>sTo advance the progress <strong>of</strong> Penn State’s Sustainability Strategic Plan.To facilitate the effi cient and safe collection <strong>of</strong> refuse, recyclable, and compostable commodities byleveraging institutional knowledge <strong>of</strong> maintenance and operations procedures.To increase the recycling participation rate <strong>of</strong> building users through consistent graphic treatment onsignage.To reduce operating costs to the university.To improve aesthetic quality <strong>of</strong> interior spaces by providing clean, consolidated, well designed, andconveniently located receptacles.HOW TO USEThis document is intended as a guideline for the design <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> recycling station types. Type 3 Receptacle - CubeAPPLICATIONIn locations where built-ins or credenzas are deemed by OPP to be unnecessary, the option <strong>of</strong>commercially manufactured receptacles may be considered.DESIGN REQUIREMENTS<strong>Design</strong>, materials and fi nishes <strong>of</strong> station to match or complement the interior decor. Submit detailedspecifi cation information including size and color <strong>of</strong> proposed receptacle to OPP for review andapproval. Customization <strong>of</strong> stock designs may be required to meet university requirements.Note: Height <strong>of</strong> receptacle cannot exceed 30”.Hinged top or side panel access are acceptableReceptacle must accommodate a rigid plastic linerNo interior bag retainer bands will be acceptedTop opening size and configuration must comply with university standardsProvide (6) six receptacles with opening and one receptacle for Organic Waste/Compost with a solidhinged top lid to mitigate the spread <strong>of</strong> odorsWall surface area above each opening must be allocated for placement <strong>of</strong> standard signage. Signs tobe provided by OPP.Commercially manufactured rigid plastic liners with height not to exceed 30” and capacity at or near23 gallons must be accommodated.Illustration <strong>of</strong> station using customized commerciallymanufactured receptacles.


Type 4 Receptacle - PlasticAPPLICATIONIn service areas, kitchens, and break rooms or in locations where less than a full seven commoditystation is required, the use <strong>of</strong> plastic receptacles may be acceptable.DESIGN REQUIREMENTSThe 23 gallon Slim Jim®, as manufactured by Rubbermaid Commercial Products, is the universitystandard. Receptacles manufactured by others will be considered if size and capacity requirementsare met.Specifi cation:20” wide x 11” deep x 30”high23 gallon capacityRefuse and recycle commodities - blue (no lid )Compost unit - green (with hinged lid)Containers to be free <strong>of</strong> symbols or logosFull stations include (7) commodities including an Organic Waste/Compost receptacle with a solid lid.Partial stations to be determined by OPP staff.Wall surface area above each receptacle must be allocated for placement <strong>of</strong> standard signage. Signsto be provided by OPP.
