i.l.\XXXVlAPPENDIX.[Q]Deposition <strong>of</strong> Joseph Kenny.Montreal, >Joseph Kenny, late <strong>of</strong> Red River, in tlitto wit. ) territory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hudson's Bay Company,now at <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Montreal, in <strong>the</strong> Province <strong>of</strong> LowerCanada, labourer, maketh oath, that he was an indentedservant in <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>Earl</strong> Selkirk, in <strong>the</strong> colony atRed River aforesaid, during three years preceding <strong>the</strong>month <strong>of</strong> June last.—That while <strong>the</strong> deponent was in<strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Earl</strong> <strong>of</strong> Selkirk aforesaid, some timein <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> February last, one James Smith, one <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> settlers at Red River aforesaid, shewed to <strong>the</strong> deponenta letter addressed to him <strong>the</strong> said James Smith ; andwhich he had received from Duncan Cameron, one <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> partners in<strong>the</strong> North -West Company, in which <strong>the</strong>said Duncan Cameron proposed to <strong>the</strong>settlers and servants<strong>of</strong> <strong>Earl</strong> Selkirk, at Red River aforesaid,to abandon<strong>the</strong>ir situations <strong>the</strong>re, and come over to <strong>the</strong> tradingpost <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> North -West Company, in <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood,called by <strong>the</strong>m Gibraltar, assuring <strong>the</strong> said JamesSmith, that <strong>the</strong> said settlers and servants would be welltreated, be provided with a passage free <strong>of</strong> expense,and be conveyed to Montreal, in Lower Canada. That<strong>the</strong> said James Smith and o<strong>the</strong>rs, in consequence <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> inducementsso held out to <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong> said DuncanCameron, did abandon <strong>the</strong> colony at Red Riveraforesaid, and went over to <strong>the</strong> said INorth-West Com-,1'I::pany, by whom <strong>the</strong>y were received and taken care <strong>of</strong>,and afterwards conveyed, some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to UpperCanada, and o<strong>the</strong>rs to Lower Canada. Thatwhile tlie deponent was at <strong>the</strong> said trading post, asaforesaid, about two or three days previous to <strong>the</strong> ele*nventh <strong>of</strong> June last, he observed in <strong>the</strong> store <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> saidNorth-West Company at <strong>the</strong> said trading post, a number<strong>of</strong> guns, with powder-horns and shot-bags, preparedand in order to be used, some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> guns being loaded,and <strong>the</strong> whole fit for immediate action. That, on <strong>the</strong>eleventh <strong>of</strong> June last, a party <strong>of</strong> half-Indians and Canadians,with some clerks in <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said North-West Company, were provided with <strong>the</strong> said guns,powder-horns, and shot-bags, prepared as aforesaid,iwhich <strong>the</strong>y received out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said store, and salliedforth from <strong>the</strong> said trading post, and made an attack on<strong>the</strong> settlements at Red River aforesaid, and kept up acontinued fire on <strong>the</strong> said settlement for at least half anhour; during which, several persons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said settlementwere wounded. That, among <strong>the</strong> persons who sosallied forth, were one Seraphim, a Canadian, a clerk in<strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said North-West Company, one Grant,and one Shaw, Indians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> half-breed, clerks in <strong>the</strong>lervice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said North-West Company, and one Bostonois,also a half-Indian, and an interpreter, in <strong>the</strong>service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said North-West Company.That, after<strong>the</strong> said firing ceased, <strong>the</strong> said party, with <strong>the</strong> saidclerks at <strong>the</strong>ir head, returned shouting, and manifesting<strong>the</strong>ir exultation at what had taken place, to <strong>the</strong> saidtrading post, where <strong>the</strong>y were received by <strong>the</strong> said DuncanCameron, who had <strong>the</strong> command and charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>said trading post, and who shook several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong>hands, and expressed his satisfaction at <strong>the</strong>ir conduct.That <strong>the</strong> deponent left <strong>the</strong> said trading post two or"'It/W^
