From <strong>the</strong>nce <strong>the</strong>y wentto <strong>the</strong> North -West Company's station at <strong>the</strong> Forks,and endeavoured to prevail upon Mr. M'^Donellto permit <strong>the</strong> settlers to remain, but without effect.The Indians <strong>the</strong>n expressed <strong>the</strong>ir regret that, from<strong>the</strong> numbers <strong>of</strong> people whom <strong>the</strong> North-WestCompany had collected in <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood,supported by <strong>the</strong> field-pieces which had been takenfrom <strong>the</strong> colony, <strong>the</strong>y were not able at that timeto protect <strong>the</strong> settlers.They <strong>the</strong>refore advised <strong>the</strong>mto depart, and <strong>of</strong>fered to give <strong>the</strong>m a safe escortfor <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>irproperty down <strong>the</strong> riverto Lake Winipic.—This <strong>of</strong>fer was thankfullyaccepted,and was probably <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong> saving<strong>the</strong> lives, as well as securing <strong>the</strong> property, <strong>of</strong> \\\cremaining settlers.
