ÊÎÐÎÒÊÎBRIEFLY● Repression of media in Ukraine:Six journalists from the widely read“Ekspress” newspaper chainedthemselves to a Budapest-to-Moscowtrain in early May in Lviv toprotest restrictions on the independentmedia.The train goes from Europe—where press freedom exists—to Russia,where it is limited. Ukraine is ata crossroads between Russia andthe West. “Ekspress” editor-in-chiefIhor Pochynok said that since ViktorYanukovych became presidentearlier this year, the situation regardingindependent media has significantlyworsened and that journalistsin Yanukovych’s Ukraine donot feel safe. In March, a case wasfiled against the Ekspress publishinggroup that alleged it had failedto pay 2.6 million hryvnia (about$328,000) in taxes.
