Тепер подаємо важливізмістові теми і погляди учасників.ПереглядХХІІ Конґресу ЛУКЖКOne hundred thirty-two delegatesand ten guests gathered at theHoliday Inn Select in Toronto fromJune 28 to July 1 to take part in theXXII Congress of the UkrainianCatholic Women’s of Leaguewith the theme “Faith in Action.”The official Congress openingincluded Moleben, celebrated byHis Grace Metropolitan LawrenceHuculak, OSBM, was assisted byBishop-elect, Fr. Ken Nowakowskiand assisted by Spiritual Advisors,Fr. John Barszczyk (National),Fr. M. Kowalchyk (Edmonton)and Fr. P. Dvirnik (Toronto). Greetingsincluded Yaroslaw Sokolykon behalf of the National UCBC,Marika Szkambara from theWorld Federation of UkrainianWomen’s Organizations, SisterJunia Kunanec, SSMI and SisterTheodosia, Sisters of St. Joseph.Shirley Lisowski, MC, thenintroduced the guest speaker, IrenaGaladza who spoke on the theme“Faith in Action”: our faith shouldnot be something we don on Sundaysor at UCWLC meetings; itneeds to be displayed every daythrough involvement in issues thataffect or are affected by our faithsuch as abortion, euthanasia, etc.The next day began with aDivine Liturgy celebrated by HisGrace and attending Bishops andSpiritual Advisors, followed bythe ceremonial procession ofUCWLC flags, remembrance ofdeceased members, calling and in-troduction of the Presidium, greetingsfrom Metropolitan Lawrence,Bishop Stephen Chmilar andFr. Ivan Barszczyk. This was followedby the usual adoption ofRules of Order, reports of variousCongress Committees, the Minutesof the XXI Congress, the report ofthe outgoing National Presidentand questions and discussion onthe reports. Olia Karaim, TorontoEparchial President, presented theMembership Growth Trophy tothe Eparchy of Saskatoon.The Congress theme was exploredby Fr. His Grace, MetropolitanLawrence was the keynote speaker onthe Congress theme, “Faith in Action.”On Sunday buses transported delegatesto the Pontifical Divine Liturgy at theDormition of the Mother of God UkrainianCatholic Church, St. Mary’sMississauga. He challengedthe UCWLC to overcome innerdisagreements and disputes amongmembers and referred to the hymn“You know we are Christians byour love.” This song has remainedwith me today and I feel that ifwe love each other as Jesus has,then we as UCWLC membersshould be able to carry out thegood deeds that wait to be done.Rose Olynyk,St. Basil’s Branch, WinnipegLanguage is a concern. All were certain that someone coulddo it. Everyone could have done it, butNo One did. Someone got angry, becausethis was Everyone’s duty. Allthought that Everyone could have donethis, but No One understood that Allwould not do this, because they werelooking at Everyone. In the end, Allaccused Everyone when No One didthat which Everyone could have done.8 Íàøà Äîðîãà îñiíü/2007Congress Roundtablesstimulate debateThe Roundtable session opened witha reading from the Gospel of St. James“…What will it profit, my brethren, ifa man says he has faith, but does nothave works?” … “For just as thebody without the spirit is dead, sofaith also without works is dead.”Rev. Taras Dusanowskyj, in his openingcomments stressed that faith hasto be a way of life, a part of our everydaylives and not only somethingthat we practice on Sundays or feastdays but ignore for the rest of the week.Our faith must have concrete actions.If we believe in creation then—take stewardship of God’s creations;if we believe in God’s love then—love one another as God loves eachand every one of us; if we believe ina merciful God then—forgive oneanother as God forgives us … thenour faith becomes a “Faith in Action.”Fr. Taras presented three questionsto be addressed and discussedduring the workshops that followed: Name five of the most pressingproblems or challenges facing ourworld today. These can be personal,family or community — related,national or global in scope. What concrete actions can UCWLCmembers take to affect changeand address these challenges? What specific virtues and/or giftsdo UCWLC members need tofoster and develop in order towork effectively for the good andwitness authentically to the Gospelof Jesus Christ?A survey of the six groups showedthat the most pressing problems are,in order of importance and with groupcomments are:The Erosion of the Family Unit:attacks upon the family unit; declineof the definition of “family” and“marriage”; promotion of same-sexmarriage; lowering of age of consent;proliferation of abortion; argumentsin favour of legalizing prostitution;Outgoing President Olena Gedz making apresentation to President Luba Kowalchykdecline of family values; commonlawrelations; co-habitation beforemarriage and sexual immorality.Mass Media and the Internet: proliferationof open access to demeaningentertainment; pornography; degradationof women as seen in musicvideos and TV programs; programsportray people of faith in a dual lifestyle,i.e. “The Sopranos” are bothreligious characters (Catholic) andare also murderers; negative influenceof media—not conducive to ourbeliefs; the media, esp. the internet isovertaking the raising of our children.Secularization: the world has becometoo materialistic; rejection ofGod from our homes, schools andgovernment; Sunday shopping; soccerand other sporting events held on Sunday;the banning of the expressions offaith in the public domain such assaying “Merry Christmas.”Answers to question number two asto what actions UCWLC membersshould take will be presented at alater time as suggested ways of puttingour “Faith in Action.”As to what virtues and/or gifts doUCWLC members need to foster anddevelop in order to work effectivelyfor the good and witness authenticallyto the Gospel of Jesus Christ aspresented by the delegates are: respect,courage, patience, honesty,empathy, understanding, trust, good

Guest lunch speaker, Irena Soltys,Chairperson of the Committeeagainst Human Trafficking, underscoredthe efforts of Canadiancharity, Children of Chornobyl(Help Us Help the Children andNove Pokolinya), in making potentialvictims in Ukraine awareof the dangers of ‘human trafficking’as well as in raising awarenessamong donors about thegrave international situation. Sheencouraged Congress participantsto understand that the fundamentalnurturing roles of woman andmother in Ukraine have been affecteddrastically by expandingsocial exploitation and their ownvictimization due to poor ecoheartedness,forgiving, hospitality,conviction, diligence, responsibility,compassion and tolerance.One group just said Love. Ifwe have Love, we have all of theabove. RESOLVED THAT WE, AS UCWLC MEMBERS, TAKE ASTANDTo ensure Municipal, Provincial and Federal Laws are upheldby way of Speaking Out to ensure new water resources.To ensure the prevention of chemical contamination fromherbicides and pesticides that are running off our land intoour lakes and rivers polluting the water and fish.To ensure the spraying of pesticides on farmland whichseeps into the ground and to our wells and water supplies isfully controlled.To ensure the stricter control of sewage disposal at the Local,Municipal, Provincial and Federal level are enforced toprovide clean water for present and future generations.BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we,at the UCWLC Eparchy level take charge in making ourvoices heard at the local, municipal, provincial or federallevel, or at all levels of government, as to our concerns regardingthe above noted matters—by way of mail, postcardand/or on-line communicationAnd that we, as consumers, be more aware and concernedas to our consumption of water, by way of individualconservation.07.03 FAITH IN ACTIONWHEREAS resolutions can serve as a powerful tool “to infusea Christian spirit into the temporal order” (Decree on theApostolate of the Laity), the Ukrainian Catholic Women’sLeague of Canada can serve the mission of the UkrainianCatholic Church in Canada and be a Christian witnessthrough our resolutions;AND WHEREAS the aims and programs of the UCWLC setout the obligations of members to practise Christian principlesof justice and love in their contributions to the socialdevelopment of our Canadian civil society;THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that each Eparchy ofUCWLC work together as a family of support and advocacyto encourage individual branches within their Eparchy toinitiate and/or participate in a specific project either for theunborn, the physically and mentally challenged, those sufferingsocial or physical exclusion, for victims of physical and/orsexual abuse and/or for victims of poverty.07.04 USE OF UKRAINIAN LANGUAGEThe founding of UCWLC on the National level was accomplishedby women of Ukrainian descent, members of UkrainianCatholic Church in Canada. Their aim was to have theirorganization participate fully in the life of the Ukrainian Community.Ukrainian language was an integral part of this organization,andWHEREAS one of the aims of UCWLC as stated in ConstitutionArticle VI, Section 2 is: “to preserve, promote and developthe Ukrainian heritage, language, culture, traditions andWHEREAS in our programs as stated in Constitution ArticleVII, Section 3а Cultural aims is stated: support teaching ofUkrainian language, history and culture in day, evening, Saturdayand summer schools.: andWHEREAS in our Mission Statement UCWLC “is committedto the mission of the Church as well as to the nurturing of ourcultural heritage” of which language is an important part. AndWHEREAS our organization now has close ties with Ukraine,RESOLVE: that to preserve and nurture this heritage, particularlythe Ukrainian language our organization insure thatimportant documents of the National Executive as well ashandbooks be written in both languages together.XXII UCWLC Congress reaffirms Resolution 05.04 CounteringTrafficking of human beings, and Resolution 05.08MMOR Campaign as well as call to Prayer as stated at theXXI Congress in Winnipeg.12 Íàøà Äîðîãà îñiíü/2007І ДАЛІ ВИРІШЕНО:ми на ЛУКЖК-Епархіяльному рівні постараємося, щоб наші голосипочули на всіх рівнях уряду, щодо наших турбот про вищезгадані справичерез листи, поштівки, і/ або е-пошту.Та щоб ми, як споживачі, стали більш свідомі і стурбовані щодонашого споживання води через особисте обмеження ужитку води.07.02 ЩОБ ОЖИВИТИ ТА ЗМІЦНИТИ НАШ ОРГАНІЗАЦІЙНИЙФУНДАМЕНТ — ВІДДІЛИТОМУ ЩО в нашій організації ЛУКЖК зменшується число членів;ТОМУ ЩО Крайові, Епархіяльні управи та управи Відділів зустрічаютьсяз труднощами щодо недостатку членства, коли треба заповнитипозиції на управах;ТОМУ ЩО ЛУКЖК мусить розпізнати теперішню кризу та шукати розв’язки.Вирішено: що ХХІІ Конґрес ЛУКЖК закличе своїх членів на всіх рівнях(Крайовому, Епархіяльному та Відділів) взятися за спільний підхід, кооперативнезусилля оживити і зміцнити відділи та:1. Щоб Крайова Управа простудіювала пропонований документ ЛениСвободи під назвою “ЛУКЖК — будуймо майбутнє на 3-тє тисячоліття”.2. Щоб цей документ розіслати до кожної Епархії та її відділів для дослідженнята відгуку.3. Щоб цей процес оживлення та зміцнення нашого організаційногофундаменту почати переглядом членства Епархіяльної Управи повідділах для вирішення вимог членів відділів для себе від ЛУКЖК.4. Щоб розпочати оргкомітетом із представників з кожної Епархії, аголовно з Едмонтонської Епархії, який приняв би цей відгук та почаврозвивати процес, як осягнути нашу ціль, щоб можна було приступитидо наступної стадії – Пленарних Нарад Крайової Управи.5. Їхньоюметою було запевнити своїй організації повну участь у житті українськоїгромади. Українська мова була невід’ємною частиною цієї організації.І ТОМУ, що однією з цілей ЛУКЖК згідно із статутом Стаття VІ, Частина2 є: Українська культура — зберігати, сприяти і розвивати українськуспадщину, мову, культуру і мистецтво;І ТОМУ, що в Статті VІІ, Частина 3а Програми, ЛУКЖК буде: підтримуватинавчання української мови, історії і культури в школах та заохочуватизаписи дітей, молоді та дорослих до них;І ТОМУ, що у Заяві нашої місії сказано, що: ЛУКЖК запевнює “у своїйтривалій відданості Місії Церкви та у плеканні нашої культурної спадщини”,важною частиною якої є мова;І ТОМУ, що наша організація має тепер тісні зв’язки з УкраїноюВИРІШЕНО: щоб зберігати і плекати нашу культурну спадщину, особливотаку важну її частину, як мова, ЛУКЖК подбає, щоб всі важливі документиКрайової Управи, а також підручники включали обидві мови разом.ХХІІ Конґрес ЛУКЖК підтверджує резолюції ХХІ Конґресу 05.05 “Поборюванняторгівлі людьми” та 05.08 – “Кампанія більше членів” і/абобільше читачів та “Заклик до молитви”.

The author shares her impressions of the UCWLC’s mammogram gift to UkraineПодарунок українським посестрам від ЛУКЖКМаммографХристина Татарська18 липня 2007 залишиться длямене пам’ятним днем — я маланагоду відвідати міську поліклініку№ 4 у Львові та оглянутинаш завершений проект“Доброго діла” — маммограф.Ще перед відвідинами я прочиталастаттю у львівськомущоденнику Високий Замок від 8травня 2007 р., у якій поданонаступне: “В четвертій міськійполіклініці відкрили маммографічнийкабінет.Найсучасніший уЛьвові цифровиймаммограф, якийопромінює у 10(!)разів менше, ніж іншімаммографи, обстежуватимежінок безкоштовно.”Далі сказано:“Обладнання подарувалильвів’янкам українкиз Канади —членкині Ліґи УкраїнськихКатолицькихЖінок Канади, які допомагаютьукраїнцямне вперше. Їхню допомогувідчули вжельвівські сиротинці,медичні заклади, духовнасемінарія.”У піднесеному настрої ми змоїм чоловіком поїхали дополіклініки, яка знаходиться уСихові — передмісті Львова.Це 10-поверховий відносно модернийбудинок, а кругом безлічвисотних житлових будинків,де здебільшого живутьменш заможні молоді родини.У гарно відновленій кімнатіполіклініки встановлениймаммограф, побіч нього стіл зкомп’ютерним обладнанням,ліворуч кабінет рентґенологад-ра Ігора Чорнія, а праворучпорожня кімната очікуєдостави додаткової апаратури.На головній стіні пропам’ятнатаблиця із посвятою:“Ліґа УкраїнськихКатолицьких Жінок Канадидарує посестрам Українимаммографічне обладнання.”Христина Татарська (справа) з д-ром Ігорем Чорніємв міській поліклініці № 4 у Львові.Дуже ввічливий д-р Чорнійпояснив нам, що маммограф щене є у загальному вжитку, бодоки він разом із другим лікарем-рентґенологомне пройдутьпотрібні курси навчання та стажуванняу Києві або Херсоні,не можуть брати відповідальностіза обстеження пацієнток.Він також розповів, що недавноприїздила з Києва лікарка,щоб продемонструвати рентґенологамяк вживати маммограф,а для демонстрування обстеженьгрудей просили лікарок поліклініки.д-р Чорній показав меніна комп’ютері знімки із тих обстежень.І це зробило на мененайбільше враження. By taking this step, the Poperecognized their martyrdom as fulfillingthe requirements to attain the firstlevel on the road to the official title ofsainthood here on earth. Although inour hearts, we already see these Blessedsas saints (as they no doubt are), asI understand it, for the Church to officiallyrecognize them as saints willrequire some miracles.We indeed are blessed in havingthe ‘crucial elements’ of the Blessedsof the Sisters of St. Joseph here inCanada. In addition, a shrine atSt. Joseph’s Ukrainian CatholicChurch in Winnipeg is home to thebody of Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky.Sister Tarsykia of the SSMI is includedin the group, too. (The foundressof the Sister Servants of MaryImmaculate, Josaphata Horodenska,also has this title, having received itearlier through a miracle.) That was theweek of the exhumation and thetransfer of the holy Relics ofBlessed Martyr Bishop VasylVelychkovsky, C.Ss.R. from AllSaints Cemetery to St. Joseph’sUkrainian Catholic Church inWinnipeg.Much preparation was needed.Civil permission was requiredfrom the Manitoba government toexhume and transferhis mortal remains.Permissionhad to be obtainedalso from the Vatican,the Congregationfor Saints.With the Vatican’spermission andmandate to proceedwith thetransfer came adetailed protocolthat had to be followed.The PostulatorGeneral forthe Redemptorists (the one who isin charge of the causes for RedemptoristSaints and Blesseds)was contacted and he, too, gave anumber of detailed instructionsfor the process.A Week in the Lifeof the Making of a SaintBy Fr. John Sianchuk, C.Ss.RWhen someone’s cause tosainthood is first begun in theChurch—a process that can takedecades—often the mortal remainsare exhumed, examined,recorded and reburied. This isdone to see whether mortal remainsare incorrupt and to simplyobserve their state. In our case,Bishop Vasyl was already proclaimeda Blessed; all the churchlaws now had to be applied. Hecould not simply be examined,fied (dried) corpse? Would theprocess of corruption be complete?We decided to prepare a fulllength stainless steel container inaccordance with Vatican prescriptionsprior to the exhumation.To accomplish this process, ateam had to be found—funeraldirector, grave diggers, a welderof stainless steel, a medical team(medical examiners, anthropologists,etc.), a photographer, achurch tribunal consisting of theThe holy body of Blessed Martyr Bishop Vasyl Velychkovsky in the sarcophagusrather his mortal remains had tobe transferred into a church. Wefaced a dilemma. What would wefind? Would it be just some bonefragments? Would we find askeleton? had to be personally authorizedby the Metropolitan withan official document.On Monday, September16, 2002 the team gathered atAll Saints Cemetery at 8:00am. It was a crisp, clear morningwith a hint of a morningmist. We began with prayerled by the Metropolitan. Theneveryone, individually, tookan oath to fulfil their office tothe best of their ability. Beforeany exhumation could takeplace, two witnesses—anoriginal pallbearer and a relative—confirmedthat this wasthe spot where Blessed Vasylwas buried. Once establishedand confirmed, at the commandof the Metropolitan, theexhumation began.It took several hours; the faithfulsang a Moleben in BlessedVasyl’s honour and also theAcafist Hymn composed toBlessed Vasyl. After the coffinwas extracted from the grave, itwas placed in a hearse fromCropo’s Funeral Home and in asolemn motor procession all proceededto St. Boniface GeneralHospital, where a room was readyfor the next stage of the process.With great reverence the coffinwas brought into the examinationroom. The long awaited andanticipated moment came—theuncovering of the coffin. Inpreparation the Acafist Hymn wasprayed. As the lid was removed,all those present in the room reverencedthemselves in awe andwonder. Although the coffin itselfwas badly damaged by water andcorruption, the body of BlessedVasyl was fully intact. His facewas covered by the chalice veilthat was placed on it during thefuneral. When it was removed hisface radiated its holiness. Hishands were of flesh colour, hold-Bishop Velychkovsky Martyr’s Shrineing the hand cross, with the episcopalring on his finger. Everyone,including the doctors, wasamazed at the state of the body,which had been in the grave foralmost thirty years. It was fullyintact with all its muscle mass.Although the body was stiffthrough rigor mortis, the armswere pliable and movable. Wewere all filled with awe.With great reverence and carethe vestments were removed fromthe body to allow complete examination.The episcopal vestments,like the coffin, were inpoor shape and fell apart shortlyafter they were removed. Hiswhole body was then washed,cleaned and examined. Since thevery ends of the toes had alreadyfallen off, they were carefullycleaned and preserved to be usedas 1st Class relics and eventuallydistributed to various churches forthe veneration by the faithful.The next day the process continued.His holy body waswrapped with cloth and a preservativecompound in accordancewith Vatican prescriptions.Then it was vested again innew episcopal robes, apanagia and cross, a handcross and episcopal ring anda veil was again placed overhis face. The holy body wasplaced into the newly madestainless steel container,along with official documentssealed in a tube. Thecontainer was welded shut,tied with a silk ribbon andsealed using melted red waxand the episcopal seal ofMetropolitan Lawrence.Although the whole processwas emotionally draining,it was very fulfilling and lifegiving.It can best be describedas having experiencedEaster. After onespends hours in prayer mediatingon the suffering and passion ofChrist and, then, on Easter morningjoyfully sings Easter Matinsand Liturgy proclaiming the greatNews that He is Risen, one experiencesa fullness of life, whichis only a small foretaste of eternityin the presence of the Almighty.A similar experience followedthose days. There was aprofound peace and joy. Therewas a great desire for silence—tobe simply in the presence of theHoly. This sacred presence wasexperienced throughout the weekas people came to venerate therelics, first at the residence of theSister Servants, then at Sts. Vladimirand Olga Cathedral and finallyat St. Joseph’s Church.This same presence now envelopsthe shrine-chapel wherehis Holy Relics are permanentlydisplayed for the veneration of allpilgrims.Rev. Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky, C.Ss.R.Bishop and MartyrÍàøà äóõîâíiñòü Spiritualitylessed Vasyl was born into a family of priestsB in Stanislaviv, now Ivano-Frankivsk, June 1,1903. He entered the Redemptorist novitiate and onOctober 9, 1925, was ordained to the priesthood.His heart was in preaching missions. Recognizingthis gift, he was soon assigned to the missionarywork in Stanislaviv and in 1928 to Volyn. It is estimatedthat he preached to over a million and a halffaithful.In 1940, on the feast of our Mother of PerpetualHelp, while the city was occupied by the Soviets,Blessed Vasyl dared to organize a procession of20,000 people through the streets of Stanislaviv ledby the Icon of Our Lady. This led to a brief arrest.In 1944, Blessed Vasyl volunteered to go to Ternopileven though the Soviet front had already arrived.Amidst the shelling of the city he carried out hispastoral work with great courage and determination.On June 26, 1945, the Soviets arrestedhim. He was offered a chance to leave theUkrainian Catholic Church. He quickly respondedwith “No. Never.” After two yearsof interrogations and tortures in the KGBprison, he was sentenced to die by firingsquad. On death row for three months, hecatechized fellow prisoners, offering supportin appalling circumstances. When his namewas called, he left the cell ready to die forChrist, but at that moment his death sentencewas commuted to ten years in Soviet labourcamps.He spent most of these years working inthe coal mines of the Vorkuta region abovethe Arctic Circle. Upon completion of thesentence, he was sent to Lviv. Here he beganto work in the underground church. Hisapartment became the centre of church activity.In 1959 Rome appointed Fr. Vasyl to bebishop of the underground church. Unfortunatelythere was no one to ordain him. In1963, Metropolitan Josyf Slipyj, also incarceratedby the anti-religious Soviet system,was released to attend Vatican II in Rome.Before departing, he summoned Fr. Vasyl tohis Moscow hotel room where he was secretlyordained to the episcopacy. MetropolitanJosyf left for Rome; Bishop Vasyl returnedto Lviv to fulfill his episcopal work.In January of 1969, Bishop Vasyl wasagain arrested and sent to Komunarsk inEastern Ukraine. There he suffered chemical,physical and mental torture. Near death in1972, he was released from prison and wasexiled from Ukraine.Metropolitan Maxim Hermaniuk invitedhim to Winnipeg. After being in Canada forabout a year he succumbed to the tortures anddeath-causing drugs received in prison. Hedied a martyr’s death on June 30, 1973. Templeton Prize for Progress Toward Researchor Discoveries about Spiritual RealitiesEW YORK, MARCH 14 —N Professor Charles Taylor, aCanadian philosopher who fornearly half a century has arguedthat problems such as violenceand bigotry can only be solved byconsidering both their secular andspiritual dimensions, has won the2007 Templeton Prize.The Templeton Prize, valuedat 800,000 pounds sterling, morethan $1.5 million, was announcedtoday at a news conference at theChurch Center for the United Nationsin New York by the JohnTempleton Foundation, which hasawarded the prize since 1973. TheTempleton Prize is the world’slargest annual monetary awardgiven to an individual.Charles Taylor is engaged incontemporary, important, crossculturalquestions such as “Whatrole does spiritual thinking havein the 21st Century?” For morethan 45 years, Taylor, 75, has arguedthat wholly depending onsecularized viewpoints only leadsto fragmented, faulty results. He continued that investigationwith his noted MarianistLecture in 1997 in Dayton, Ohio,where he declared that the CatholicChurch could find its placewithin the modern world by seeingWestern modernity as one amongthe many civilizations in whichChristianity has been preached andpractised. This would avoid both thetotal identification with Europeancivilization which has blunted theChristian message, and also theopposite extreme of seeing modernityas the antithesis or enemyof Christian faith. It was publishedas a book entitled, A Catholic Modernity?in 1999. Noting the possibilityof a “spiritual lobotomy,” hewarned, “There can never be a totalfusion of the faith and any particularsociety, and the attempt toachieve it is dangerous for the faith.”Then, in 1998-99, Taylor deliveredthe renowned Gifford Lectures,entitled “Living in a Secular Age,”at the University of Edinburgh.The lectures, published in threevolumes, offered a staggeringlydetailed analysis of the movementaway from spirituality in favourof so-called objective reasoning.Many expect the final volume, ASecular Age, scheduled for publicationby Harvard UniversityPress later this year, to be themost important literary achievementof Taylor’s lifetime and thedefinitive examination of secularizationand the modern world.The Premier of Quebec, JeanCharest, recently appointed Taylorto co-chair a commission on accommodationof cultural religiousdifferences in public life. “Thedebate on this issue in our societyhas recently taken on worryingfeatures,” Taylor says, “includinga dash of xenophobia.” Hearingsthroughout the province are expectedto begin in Fall 2007.Taylor, who lives with hiswife, Aube Billard, an art historian,in Montréal, and, currentlyin Evanston, Illinois, has said hewill use the Templeton Prizemoney to advance his studies ofthe relationship of language andlinguistic meaning to art and theologyand to developing new conceptsof relating human scienceswith biological sciences.The Foundation noted that Taylor’sselection as the 2007 TempletonPrize Laureate will launcha broad, online discussion of thequestion, “What role does spiritualthinking have in the 21st Century?”at its website, www.templeton.org.20 Íàøà Äîðîãà îñiíü/2007

But othersagain understand such as endurewith patience the hardships ofhunger and thirst.Many theologians have commentedon this verse, here aresome that I have found:St. Rupert, the Bishop of Salzberg,who died on Easter Sunday,March 27, 718, was also a contemporaryof Childebert III, Kingof the Franks, understands thispassage to mean those to whomjustice is denied, such as the poorwidows and orphans.Cardinal Juan Maldondo, the16th century theologian and exegete,says, “those who from povertyreally suffer hunger andthirst, because justice is not donethem. They shall be filled withevery kind of good in their heavenlycountry.” “I shall be filledwhen Your glory shall appear.”— Psalm 16Matthew 5:7 “Blessed arethe merciful: for they shallobtain mercy.”This is not only the giving ofalms, but the practice of all worksof mercy, both Corporal andSpiritual, are recommended here,and the reward will be given onthat day when God will repayevery one according to his works,and will do by us, as we havedone by our brethren. This is theDivine Mercy of God that wasrevealed to St. Faustina.Matthew 5:8 “Blessed arethe clean of heart: for theyshall see God.”The clean of heart are either thosewho give themselves to the practiceof every virtue, and are consciousto themselves of no evil, orthose who are adorned with thevirtue of chastity. For nothing isso necessary as this purity in suchas desire to see God. Many aremerciful to the poor and just intheir dealings, but don’t abstainfrom the luxury and lust. Thereforeour Blessed Lord, wishing toshow that mercy was not sufficient,adds, that if we would seeGod, we must also be possessedof the virtue of purity.Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are thepeace-makers: for they shallbe called children of God.”“To be peaceful ourselves andwith others, and to bring such asare at variance together, will entitleus to be children of God. Pat was willingand pleased to serve as a consultantand we greatly appreciated herknowledge, dedication and love tothe UCWLC.Olga Twerdun,St. Basil’s Branch, Winnipeg Anne (Kohut) Jacyszyn1924-2007Born in the Ivano-Frankivsk region,Anne, a lively five-year-old,arrived in Toronto in 1929 with herparents and younger sister, Mary.In her youth, she loved Ukrainiandancing, the mandolin and gymnastics.A member of St. DemetriusUCWLC since 1969, Anne’sfriendly, out-going personalitymade her ideal to head up the SpiritualCommittee for 15 years. Shephoned to cheer up ailing members,sent get-well and sympathy cardsand requested Divine Liturgies.Every year she encouraged ladiesto join her in the Annual Retreat inAncaster.Anne supported our publicationof Iryna Senyk’s book “White Asterof Love” and modelled a Senyk‘original’ in the fashion show at itslaunch. In 1999, when Iryna Senykwas honoured as a Heroine of theWorld, Anne joined the group fromSt. D’s UCWLC who travelled toRochester, N.Y, to applaud Iryna asshe received her award.Anne volunteered at the UkrainianCanadian Care Centre. She receivedher gold pin as a canvasserfor the Canadian Cancer Societyand often join in to make pyrohyfor parish functions. Anne receivedher 30-year UCWLC membershippin in 2000.With her husband, John, shetravelled to Ukraine many timesand totally supported him when hearranged to have a church built inhis family village. Together theyrejoiced when they witnessed thelocal bishop bless it in 2003.It was her faith that helped heraccept the tragic death of her onlyson, Harry, in 2002. ICW Triennium Conference in KyivBy Dr. Mary PankiwThe 31st General Assembly of theInternational Council of Women(ICW) was held at Ukraine Housein Kyiv, Ukraine last September.The Assembly was attended by293 delegates from 44 countriesand five continents. In keepingwith the theme: “ChallengingGender Equality,” gender issueswere central to the content of thesessions and to every woman.The Assembly commencedwith a city tour and a receptionhosted by Kyiv’s Mayor, LeonidChernovetskiy. Iryna Holubeva,President of the National Councilof Women of Ukraine, officiallyopened the General Assemblywelcoming the delegates and introducedDr. Anamah Tan, ICWPresident from Singapore. Dr.Tan was welcomed in the Ukrainiantraditional manner with apresentation of braided bread andsalt by Ukrainian youth membersin colourful native costumes.The keynote speaker was YurijPavlenko, Minister of Familyand Youth Affairs. He concludedthat gender problems coexistwith gender inequality andthat discrimination issues againstwomen are being addressed.Five parallel workshops wereheld simultaneously on the followingtopics:• Extreme poverty• Women and Health• Environmental and Water• Trafficking in women• Eradication of discriminationand violence against the girlchildI attended the “Trafficking inwomen” workshop, which highlightedthe topic: “Trafficking inwomen is a serious denial of HumanRights, is widespread in allcountries.” Recommendationsfocused on the need for politicalwill, involvement by internationalpolice forces and government,educational programs for abusivemen and rehabilitation programsfor trafficking victims.The following day, the ICWpassed a Resolution: “Traffickingin Women and Children” andcalled upon members of the NationalCouncils to urge their NationalGovernments to: Reviewand strengthen laws prohibitingtrafficking in persons with a viewto detecting and punishing attemptsto bring in women andchildren for sexual exploitation;implement measures to assistearly discovery of women andchildren brought in for that purpose;provide the means for suchwomen and children to return totheir own families, or resettle in asafe environment.Two Ukrainian women’sseminars were impressive. Themorning seminar addressed thetopic: “Gender Policy in Ukraine:Challenges and Responses.” Issuesconcerning equality betweenmen and women were discussedby the round table participants,which included several Ukrainianwomen who were Deputies ofParliament. Tetyana Kondratyuk,Minister Pavlenko’s Deputy Ministerof Ukraine for Family,Youth, and Sports, reported on“Strategic Directions of GenderTransformations in Ukraine,” andtheir efforts to get more womenelected. Women hold 8% of theseats in Parliament and none inCabinet but expect to do better inthe next election.The afternoon seminar was aworkshop on “Political Empowermentof Women: International andUkrainian Practice.” A member ofa charitable foundation spokeabout women’s organizations andthe role of young women’s organizations.Younger women representativesfrom an informationconsulting centre, a school of equalopportunities that transported interactivetheatre, Natalia Kobrynskaand Kyiv women’s centres, Tavridacentre of gender studies, andthe “First Steps to Success” program,shared their innovative ideas.At the farewell Gala Banquet,President’s Hotel, Dr. AnamahTan introduced First Lady KaterynaYushchenko and thanked herfor being the Honorary Patron. the 31st Assembly and wishedthe delegates continuing success.The final day commencedwith an Interfaith Service,and moved on to proceduresand business. “TheChallenge of Achieving GenderEquality” is the theme ofthe next Triennium.This was my first experienceto attend an internationalconference of this magnitude.The Ukrainian hospitality wasoutstanding and I found it culturallyenriching and revitalizingand enjoyed the opportu-nity to network with the internationalmembers.ICW TrienniumAssembly in KyivThe Resolution on traffickinghighlights the plight of ourorphans in Ukraine. Do wewant to become part of thesolution to the problem ofsexually exploited youth? Unknownto them, when theyleave the orphanage, theirlives and future have been barteredfor a monetary bribe.ICW TRIENNIUM CONFERENCERecommendationsA need exists for the government to:• Review conditions, procedures and programs in orphanages• Implement measures for orphans in an environment wheredaily needs are met, and educational programs provideemployment skills• Prepare the orphans with skills and strategies to cope withdaily living in the outside world• Provide the means for orphans, who are being let out ontheir own, to resettle in a safe environmentQuestions1. What can the UCWLC do in moving these issues?Answer: They can participate and send their ownResolutions.2. Are we already doing the right things?Answer: Yes. We present our Resolutions and work withand support groups with our common aim.3. The author identifies some key issues of considerable importance to the Ukrainian community—Internment, Denaturalization and Deportation, Holodomor, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), theirrelative obscurity outside the community and the need for all Canadians to know more about them.Errors of OmissionBy Dr. William ZuzakOver the years, I have noted thatthe news media, politicians andpublic figures are reluctant to referto human rights abuses perpetratedagainst Ukrainians. I haveoften wondered whether theseerrors of omission are deliberate,simply a result of ignorance, or amatter of political correctness—orlack thereof.The issue of Internment ofUkrainians during WWI is a perfectexample. Despite being onthe political agenda since the1980s, this event is absent frompublic discourse:n On 22 Feb 2007 during aHouse of Commons discussion onCitizenship and Immigration, twoMPs (Brian Fitzpatrick and JasonKenney) talked at some length asto incidents of discriminationagainst immigrants in Canada—the ship with Jewish refugees beforeWWII being denied landingrights, Japanese Internment, theChinese head tax, FLQ crisis,etc., but failed to refer to UkrainianWWI Internment. (A coupleof days earlier, Joe Comartin wasguilty of a similar omission.)n On 28 Feb 2007 (about 7:15a.m.) CBC Radio 740 in Edmontonhad Ron Wilson interviewingcriminal lawyer, Bob Aloneissi,about security certificates. Проклинаюненависну систему, що “добровільно”повезе мене на повільнуморальну і фізичну смерть, “добровільно”забере у мене дитинуй родину, “добровільно” примушуємене кривити душею.Чую, як за стіною ридаютьмама й сестра. На подвір’ї голоситьі проклинає Сталіна сусідка.Безпомічне, принижене, зтероризованесело плаче у безсилійлюті й жалі.Я вслухаюся в цей плач, стискуюзуби й п’ястуки, опановуюсобою. На мене дивиться БожаМати. Та сама, що зворушилапольського вояка, і я йду за поміччюдо Неї. З молитвою приходитьспокій. This is a long anddifficult process as the majorityof the member countriesmust support the resolution. Agood start was done this yearby the government of Ukrainewhich asked for this designationfor the murdered Ukrainiansof the Famine.Ukraine needs help. Eachcountry where freedom-lovingpeople reside—Canada, ofcourse—must petition theirgovernments to support such aresolution in the UN. Despitethe fact that four MPs of Ukrainiandescent raised the issuein our parliament recently,Canada’s House of Commonshas NOT passed any such legislationand a Senate resolutiondoes not have the force oflaw which means that in Canadawe have done less to recognizethe Famine than hasbeen done in Poland.Here is a job for our Leagueand our community: to ensurethe recognition of the GreatFamine as a genocide by theUnited Nations by engaging ourchurches, organizations andthe Ukrainian Canadian Congress:evil must be condemnedor it will rise again. The school provides a quality educationfor young students who will be future leaders.Through PWS&D congregations in Canadahave helped the farm expand. A new barn tohouse livestock, and greenhouses to grow freshfruit and vegetables, has been built. Does that mean that onlythe resolutions will be dealt with andthe others forgotten?Not necessarily. Most likely, itmeans that the resolutions, preparedahead of time, will be enlarged withother action items discussed at theCongress. Одна з причинцього — наука і вища освіта внайращих академічних інституціях.Потім — вони заанґажовані в життіКанади. Беруть активну участь увсьому і вимагають уваги до своїхсправ. Їхня молодь — це впевненів собі люди з почуттям рівноправності.І що дуже важливо: політикаКанади вишукує присутність “visibleminorities” у впливових структурах.Це вони собі виробили в Канаді.
