The J.C. Reeves FamilyJ.C. Reeves was born the third son of Raymond Clinton and Myrtle McDonald Reeves in theirrural home in the Locust Grove Community, northeast of Shamrock. Brothers Roy and Amos wereborn before J.C., Kenneth and Donald later. He attended school at Locust Grove. Oftentimes on theirway home from school, the Reeves brothers would stop by Grandmother McDonald's for a snack, orstop to play catch with Arvel Montgomery. Arvel, who was confined to crutches as a result of polio, was very adept at playing "burn out" with them.As a youngster, J.C. was allowed to collect one-third of the proceeds from ten acres of cotton aspayment for helping with the farm chores and working in the fields. He, Roy and Amos were partnerson the ten acres. The first year's profit of $300 was well worth the time and effort. Next year's profitof $90 was the deciding point in J.C.'s life when he began thinking about another way to earn aliving. He left home at age fourteen and went to Bovina to work for an uncle on his stock farm. Heand a cousin fed 500 head of cattle during the winter months. He returned to Shamrock and farmedwith his family for another year before deciding to attend barber school. After receiving certification as a barber, he practiced in Hubbard, Shamrock and Pampa. ItemsJ.C. used while working in Tindall's Barber Shop are now displayed in Shamrock's Pioneer WestMuseum. From Pampa, he moved to Memphis where he owned and operated a bowling alley; then movingto Littlefield to do the same. With the outbreak of World War II, he joined the Air Force and spent basic training inShreveport, Louisiana. He was transferred to Savannah, Georgia; Manchester, New Hampshire;Langley Field, Virginia; Miami, Florida; Tucson, Arizona; McCook, Nebraska; then on to Sudsbury,England where he served as Supply Sergeant until time to be discharged. While stationed in Manchester, he met Marie Angie Gabbois to whom he was married while inFlorida. After being discharged from service, the Reeves settled in Manchester. Their daughter, CarolAnne, was born there. She is married to Donald D. Sessom and has a daughter, Candie Jo. They livein Sonora where both Carol and Don are coaches in the schools. In 1947 having had enough of the bitter winter weather in New Hampshire, J .C. moved hisfamily to Amarillo where he worked in (and later purchased) the Amarillo Building Barber Shop. Thebusiness grew as the years rolled by with bankers, lawyers, attorneys and other prominentbusinessmen as a clientele. J.C. sold the barber shop in 1972 and began running cattle on the TurkeyTrack Ranch with Jimmy Whittenburg. Marie died in 1973.After J.C. and Nan Little McMurray were married, they moved to Shamrock where he hadranching and gas interests. Nan has two sons by a previous marriage: Lee Harmon McMurray, wholives in Amarillo, and Ronald Earl McMurray of Oklahoma City. Nan, who was reared in Deaf SmithCounty, is currently serving as Shamrock Chamber of Commerce manager.46
