Fatty foods, for example,may lose fat dur<strong>in</strong>g bak<strong>in</strong>g or grill<strong>in</strong>g, and most foods will lose significantamounts of moisture, mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> comparisons ‘per 100g’ difficult to compare.Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, some products did not <strong>in</strong>dicate whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> details <strong>the</strong>y gave appliedto <strong>the</strong> raw or <strong>the</strong> cooked version.6.2 Incomplete and confus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>gredients listsCompound <strong>in</strong>gredients such as ‘hot dog sausages’, ‘batter’, ‘m<strong>in</strong>i burgers’, ‘baconbites’ and ‘cheese’ were listed on some packag<strong>in</strong>g, but without a breakdown ofwhat <strong>the</strong>se conta<strong>in</strong>ed. For a shopper try<strong>in</strong>g to avoid additives or allergens, thislack of detailed <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion presents problems.Additives such as colour<strong>in</strong>gs were sometimes listed as E-numbers, and sometimesas <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>full</strong> names. This has <strong>the</strong> potential to confuse consumers who areattempt<strong>in</strong>g to make comparisons.6.3 Mislead<strong>in</strong>g statements or <strong>in</strong>appropriate adviceThe wrapper on packet of ASDA cake bars stated “No colours, No Flavour<strong>in</strong>gs”and <strong>the</strong>n listed ‘flavour<strong>in</strong>gs’ twice as <strong>in</strong>gredients. Mistakes on labels – such asmisplaced decimal po<strong>in</strong>ts – were seen on canned goods <strong>in</strong> Sa<strong>in</strong>sbury’s and onfrozen vegetables <strong>in</strong> Iceland.Inappropriate advice was also found on several products. Quaker Harvest chewycereal bars say ‘They are ideal for school lunchboxes – or as a snack anytime’ on<strong>the</strong>ir packag<strong>in</strong>g. However, <strong>the</strong>se products are 30% sugar (30g of sugar per 100g)28
