<strong>Contam<strong>in</strong>ant</strong> <strong>pathways</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Curtis</strong>: F<strong>in</strong>al <strong>report</strong>1: Introduction1.3 Study objectivesFollow<strong>in</strong>g extensive scop<strong>in</strong>g activities which <strong>in</strong>cluded discussions with localstakeholders and CRC members, a number of specific goals for the <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Curtis</strong><strong>Contam<strong>in</strong>ant</strong> Pathways project were developed. The goals comprised a mixture ofscientific <strong>in</strong>vestigations with direct l<strong>in</strong>kages to <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Curtis</strong> and some frontierresearch activities which would advance the ability to assess contam<strong>in</strong>ant impacts.These goals were as follows:(i)(ii)(iii)(iv)(v)Identification of the sources of dissolved and particulate contam<strong>in</strong>antsto <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Curtis</strong>Further development of the <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Curtis</strong> hydrodynamic model and itsapplication to contam<strong>in</strong>ant managementDevelopment and trial of sublethal biomarker tests for assess<strong>in</strong>gorganism health <strong>in</strong> <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Curtis</strong> (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>vestigation on thebiological effects of TBT)Characterisation of metal bioaccumulation <strong>pathways</strong> affect<strong>in</strong>g keyorganisms resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Curtis</strong>Exam<strong>in</strong>ation of the effect of contam<strong>in</strong>ant pulse events on biologicalresponses. It was recognised that pulse exposure to contam<strong>in</strong>ants isprobably a more realistic scenario for <strong>Port</strong> <strong>Curtis</strong> than steady-state,cont<strong>in</strong>uous exposure.The <strong>Contam<strong>in</strong>ant</strong> Pathways study commenced <strong>in</strong> June 2003 and f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>in</strong>October 2005. This <strong>report</strong> summarises the outputs of the study. Further detailed<strong>in</strong>formation of the specific studies conducted may be found <strong>in</strong> the <strong>report</strong>s andpublications which are referenced at the end of each chapter.6
