Contaminant pathways in Port Curtis: Final report4: Hydrodynamic model evaluationChapter 4 Port Curtis hydrodynamic model evaluation4.1 BackgroundIn the first phase of Coastal CRC activities, a pilot 3D hydrodynamic model wasdeveloped for Port Curtis and the local region (Herzfeld et al. 2003). The pilot modelwas subjected to limited calibration only but was adjudged to provide realistic, butnot necessarily accurate predictions of water column mixing. The pilot modelshowed that the water circulation within Port Curtis estuary allows dissolved materialto be dispersed evenly throughout the estuary; however, material has difficultyleaving the estuary into the offshore environment. The e-folding flushing time(i.e. the time for total mass of material to decrease to ~1/3 of its original mass) forthe estuary was of the order of 19 days. (2003) for further detailsThe resources allocated in the Contaminant Pathways project were not sufficientto carry out further model development and full model calibration, so, in its place,a campaign-based field program followed by a less rigorous model evaluation wascarried out. This evaluation assessed the existing model’s performance, and maderecommendations as to what further work might be necessary to complete modeldevelopment.The pilot model was designed to address environmental impacts, and for thesepurposes, the dispersion of a tracer over multiple tidal cycles is one of the keyoutputs. Evaluation of transport prediction is best addressed by comparingpredicted and observed distributions of a conservative tracer. The most readilyavailable tracer of this nature is salinity. An evaluation was therefore based around44
