ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, October 15, 2009 5SUDOKUGARDENER’S MAILBAGComplete the Sudoku grid so that each row, each column, and each 3 by 3 box containsthe numbers 1 through 9. Numbers cannotbe duplicated in a row or a column.Continued from page 4ter-hardy annuals for your urns. Inthe summer, trailing lantana, purslaneor fan flower could all be pretty.Success in the urns in the summerdepends on the size of the urns (andtheir soil reservoirs), also the careyou’ll be able to give them.Dear Neil: What can we do to stopan animal that is digging into ourlawn at night? It sounds like you may have anarmadillo. Look for its hole somewherenearby. It will be carefullyconcealed behind shrubs, under alarge boulder or beneath the deckor foundation of your home. Onceyou’ve found it, and taking the locationof the damaged lawn areas intoconsideration, get a humane animaltrap (one suited for a raccoon willbe the proper size), and position itdirectly in the animal’s path. Usechicken wire to make “wings” to thetrap. Extend the wire out by 15 or20 feet in both directions away fromthe trap. The armadillo will run intothe fence, bounce along it until itperceives a “gate.” Not being one tokill animals, my suggestion is thatyou take the captured armadillo10 or 12 miles away, where you canrelease it in a stream bed or otherarea where it won’t damage otherpeople’s landscapes or field crops.Dear Neil: I want to build someraised beds for my vegetable garden, but I’m concerned about the chemicalsthat are in railroad ties andtreated pine. What would you recommend?Raised beds are an excellent idea, especially if you’re gardening ina spot where prolonged rain andpoor drainage result in poor growthor death of your plants. I quit usingthe timbers 15 or 20 years ago.Since then, I’ve used large, roundriver rocks from the stone yard asthe edging for some of my spaces. Idid a shallow trench and set themin it. They’re embedded, that way,and can’t roll out of place. When Ihave more room, I just taper the beddown to ground level with the backof my garden rake. That allows thebed to shed rainfall, and it workswell, at least in our setting.!Have a question you’d like Neil toconsider?
