Susan has abundant enthusiasm <strong>for</strong>the process, skills and tools of engineering as she seeks to create and improve things. Her passion<strong>for</strong> helping others is leading her toward a career in engineering that focuses on products andsystems that will help disadvantaged people have access to ordinary lives. Susan’s passion <strong>for</strong>detail and design extends into the arts as well. Having served as a stage manager, Susan wasinstrumental in productions of “A Christmas Carol” and “How to Succeed in Business WithoutReally Trying.” She also sings in concert choirs and has been playing the fiddle <strong>for</strong> more than nineyears.Susan will attend Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering.Julie KelmanWilliam H. Hall High School,West <strong>Hart<strong>for</strong>d</strong>Julie is described by her school counselor as a “dedicated, compassionate and motivated student”and “an extraordinary individual with many talents and interests.” In addition to excellingacademically, Julie is especially proud that she founded andwas co-president of her school’s Community Service Club,organizing over 60 volunteers and matching them withcommunity needs. She was also the co-captain of the varsitytennis team and, through the team, part of the CentralConnecticut Conference All-Academic team. Julie isinterested in biology and medicine and she was happy tohave inspired the next generation of scientists in the Chem4 Kids tutoring program. She has already been acceptedinto her university’s medical school.Julie Kelman:“By pursuing a collegeeducation, I will have thefreedom to learn in aplethora of areas, theability to develop intrinsicskills, and the opportunityto realize new passions.”Julie will attend Northwestern University.Jessica LeonardWindsor High SchoolJessica co-founded the Project Earth student club at Windsor High School. Through this club,she helped to raise funds to purchase recycling bins and plant seven dogwood trees. She has beendescribed as a caring, smart leader. From the age of 6, Jessica helped her grandparents with thefamily farm by providing assistance at the fruit and vegetable stand. Through this work she learnedhow to persevere in hot weather and how to work with all types of customers, including those whowere not courteous. In college she aspires to study business with a focus in marketing. Aftergraduation she would like to work <strong>for</strong> a nonprofit organization.Jessica will attend the University of Connecticut.Dalton MinorUniversity High School ofScience and Engineering,<strong>Hart<strong>for</strong>d</strong>Attending college is a natural choice <strong>for</strong> Dalton. He knows that he will enhance his opportunitieswith a college degree. Through his studies and his sports activities, Dalton is learning thatdedication, not just natural ability, pays off. His pace in cross country and track and field propelledhim further in his development as an athlete and scholar. Dalton can constantly “see problems thatcan be solved, tests that can be run, data to collect and analyze, and relationships that can bemodeled” and thus will pursue a degree in computer science. His goal is to write code <strong>for</strong> servers,working in algorithm development or data management.Dalton is attending the University of Connecticut.Brittany SchultzGranby Memorial High SchoolBrittany has had major accomplishments this past year, such as receiving the Scholar AthleteAward in softball, being inducted into the National Honor Society and representing Granby at Girls’State. These accomplishments have not come easy <strong>for</strong> her since her mother passed awayunexpectedly this year. Her teachers have been impressed with how much she has grown and knowthat when Brittany sets her mind on something, she will not rest until she achieves her goal.
