Lucia GreeneGlastonbury High SchoolLucia wants to stay close to home <strong>for</strong> college and will follow in her father’s footsteps and attend theUniversity of Connecticut. She describes her purpose in life “to heal and to help” and has beeninvolved in a host of organizations in high school. She is most proud of her membership in thedrama club where she appeared in several plays. Her teachers describe her as focused,hardworking, personable, collaborative and kind. With all of these attributes, Lucia will certainlysucceed in reaching her career goal as a broadcast journalist.Lucia will attend the University of Connecticut.Jonathan KaplanGlastonbury High SchoolDescribed as a joyful young man by his teachers, Jonathan is a gifted student. Those who know himcite strong communication and interpersonal skills along with motivation and maturity as the keyfactors contributing to his success. After lettering every year in high school, Jonathan has earned aspot on a Division I college team through his dedication and perseverance. While a busy studentathlete, Jonathan took the initiative to coach others to help insure the future strength of his highschool’s lacrosse team. Jonathan is also very involved in community service, having participated inseveral fundraisers to benefit the American Brain Tumor Association.Jonathan will attend the University of Vermont and major in business.Adam McCannWindsor High SchoolAdam has successfully pursued the most challenging of academic courses in high school. He wasinducted into the Latin Honor Society as well as the National and French honor societies. He hasattended several summer programs sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University Center <strong>for</strong> TalentedYouth. These programs concentrate on topics such as politics in the Middle East, ancient Greek andinternational politics. In addition to being gifted academically, Adam is a skilled musician. He hasreceived recognition both by the Windsor High School Orchestra program and the town’s CommunityOrchestra. Adam is an active member of his church’s youth group, he volunteers at a local nursing homeand serves meals at a local shelter. He is planning on a double major in international politics and writing.Adam will attend Johns Hopkins University.Douglas PetersWindsor High SchoolDouglas has a dream. His greatest desire is to become Teacher of the Year as an elementaryschool teacher. His kindness and compassion exude as he plans to fulfill this dream. Doug hastaken great care to pay attention in school and participate in activities that would boost his ef<strong>for</strong>tsacademically. His observations of his mother as she teaches in her preschool class have helpedfuel his desire to teach young children, especially those with special needs. As a member of theNational Honor Society, editor-in-chief of the school paper and member of the orchestra, Doug lovesschool and wants to instill that same feeling in young children. As a gifted string musician, he plansto promote reading skills through music in his classroom.Doug will attend Vassar College.Gwendolyn PeytonWindsor High SchoolGwendolyn aspires to join the Peace Corps after college graduation. She ultimately wants a careerthat will allow her to help others. Gwendolyn is described as responsible, hardworking andcommitted to community service. At Windsor High School, she excelled in academics and inextracurricular activities, resulting in an award from the Connecticut Association of <strong>Public</strong> SchoolSuperintendents <strong>for</strong> excellence in community service. She served as the vice president of the KeyClub and Donate Life Connecticut, where she helped to fundraise and bring awareness to organ andtissue donation. Her father suffered from liver disease and this fuels her dedication to making adifference and helping those in need.Gwendolyn has been accepted into the honors program at the University of Connecticut.Since 1945, the <strong>Hart<strong>for</strong>d</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> has awardedover 5,900 scholarships.Har t<strong>for</strong>d <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Giving</strong> C o l l e g e S c h o l a r s h i p R e c i p i e n t s 17
