She participated in soccer, gymnastics and track and field throughout highschool. She was named captain in both track and field and gymnastics. She takes her role inathletics very seriously and holds herself to high standards. Community involvement plays animportant role in Kate’s life. She volunteers on various mission trips and she is co-president of the“Lose the Training Wheels” program that teaches special needs children to ride bicycles. She raised$15,000 this year to keep this program going in her community. Kate is interested in studyingsports medicine or physical therapy.Kate plans to attend the University of Connecticut.Elmer Cooke Young — Ethel Taylor Young ScholarshipBenjamin DoolittleWindsor High SchoolNot often do you meet a young man with a black belt in Karate who enjoys (and teaches) skiing,and who is also an aspiring author. This is Ben Doolittle. Ben has been involved in karate <strong>for</strong> morethan 10 years, and it has taught him self-control, discipline, respect and confidence. It has alsogiven him an interest in the Asian culture, which he would like to explore in more depth in college,perhaps even majoring in Japanese. Ben also teaches skiing on winter weekends, and is currentlywriting two books, inspired by the fantasy writings of J.R.R. Tolkien.
