We are also an acknowledged industry leader in environment, health, and safety management. This dual reputation reflects our commitment to bringingneeded medicines to patients worldwide as quickly as possible while adhering tothe values embodied by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pledge.Today we are embarked on an exciting new chapter in Bristol-MyersSquibb’s history as we focus on our core medicines business. As weaccelerate discovery and development of new medicines, we remaincommitted to reducing waste, protecting employee health andsafety, and minimizing the use of chemicals of concern. Our Green Chemistry program is a partnership of the company’sPharmaceutical Research Institute, Technical Operations, andEnvironment, Health & Safety (EHS) to promote innovative andcost-effective approaches for reducing the impacts and risks of ourproducts and processes. This program is part of our company’s overallstrategy for meeting Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Sustainability 2010 Goals. Weembrace the 2010 goals because they will result in valuable business and EHSbenefits to our operations worldwide.Building EHS improvements into our pharmaceuticals development processes willsave critical resources while clearly supporting our pledge to be a conscientiouscorporate citizen. The Green Chemistry program is an important component ofthis commitment.Green Chemistryis a frameworkthat enables scientistsand engineers to considerenvironment, health, and safety impacts earlyin the pharmaceuticaldevelopment process –yielding business andenvironmental benefits forBristol-Myers Squibb, our employees, and the communitiesin which we operate.

Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Green Chemistry ProgramGreen Chemistry is:• designing a process that is solvent free, rather thanhandling and disposing of highly regulated solvent wastes• finding an alternative to using a chemical of concern, ratherthan using personal control equipment to prevent chemicalexposures• designing processes to minimize environment, health, andsafety impacts in the early stages of product design, ratherthan requiring extensive control measures to minimize risk.In each of the above cases, the first approach is the choiceof preference for implementing Green Chemistry in theworkplace. Business decisions are based on several factors, including resources, timing, and financial impact.Environment, health and safety issues affecthow efficiently, quickly and cost-effectivelythe company can bring new pharmaceuticalproducts to market. Better management ofthese issues will help us achieve Bristol-MyersSquibb’s long-term strategic objectives. TheGreen Chemistry program provides scientistsand engineers with the right tool – theProcess Greenness Scorecard – to identify theenvironment, health and safety implicationsof new and existing products and processes. The program encourages partnering between thePharmaceutical Research Institute and TechnicalOperations to share information and make criticaldecisions early in the development process, whenalternative approaches can be considered moreeffectively. The Green Chemistry program can helpBristol-Myers Squibb develop innovative, costeffectivemedicines that extend and enhancehuman life by:• protecting the health and safety of the peoplewho design, develop, manufacture, and useour pharmaceutical products• integrating environmentally preferableprocesses at the earliest possible stage of productdesign• minimizing the use of regulated materials• promoting the recovery and recycling of solvents• reducing waste generation• encouraging telescoping of processes to minimize thepotential for releases and exposures• meeting the needs of the growing number of customersand consumers who make purchasing decisions based on acompany’s social and environmental reputation.By implementing the Green Chemistry program, Bristol-Myers Squibb can minimize environmental impacts while atthe same time reduce costs and often shorten time to market:a real win-win opportunity.
