Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Green Chemistry ProgramGreen Chemistry is:• designing a process that is solvent free, rather thanhandling and disposing of highly regulated solvent wastes• finding an alternative to using a chemical of concern, ratherthan using personal control equipment to prevent chemicalexposures• designing processes to minimize environment, health, andsafety impacts in the early stages of product design, ratherthan requiring extensive control measures to minimize risk.In each of the above cases, the first approach is the choiceof preference for implementing Green Chemistry in theworkplace. Business decisions are based on several factors,including resources, timing, and financial impact.Environment, health and safety issues affecthow efficiently, quickly and cost-effectivelythe company can bring new pharmaceuticalproducts to market.
