Sand and gravel deposits are found extensively in Cass, CrowWing, and Itasca Counties as well as in and around Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, at thesouthern extreme of the study area. Figure 1 shows the surface geology of Minnesota.The Mississippi River basin contains two iron ore ranges, the Mesabi and Cuyuna. InItasca <strong>County</strong>, the Mesabi Iron Range extends northeast to southwest across the prairieand the Mississippi River, passing through and terminating several miles southwest ofGrand Rapids. The Cuyuna Iron Range runs parallel to the Mississippi River and thencrosses it near the center part of the eastern border of Crow Wing <strong>County</strong>. Iron orereserves in the Mesabi Range contain four major types: natural ore, nonmagnetictaconite, magnetic taconite, and semitaconite.
