SANKALPADISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIESLeaders Need to Delegate, Communicate: Bijou KurienBijou Kurien, President & Chief Executive of the Lifestyle division of Reliance Retail, spoke at the Times of India's‘Leaders on Leadership’ lecture series, hosted by M S Ramaiah Institute of Management, on Feb 12th.“The distributed workforces of today require a very different kind of leadership,” said Kurien adding that in the past, when the entire workforce was in a single office, leaders needed principally to plan and control. "But withorganizations expanding across the country and the world, it brings challenges for communication and themanagement of the implementation of vision," he said.“In the new environment, it was important to have leaders who are able to connect with the distributed workforce. You need to travel and be in contact with people. You have to be able to articulate your vision across the organization. And you have to do a lot of delegation and monitoring, was the advise given by Mr. Kurien.Kurien started his career with Hindustan Unilever (then Hindustan Lever ) in 1981, was in Titan Industries between1987 and 2006, and has been with Reliance Retail since then.Kurien said the need for leaders in India was growing, with more and more Indian business houses flourishing andprofessionalizing. "Pre-1990, there were few Indian business houses, and MNCs dominated. The MNCs primarily required managers who would implement the headquarters ' demands. But post-1990, manynew Indian business houses have emerged, and as they scale, they recognize the need to professionalize. And theyneed people who are leaders, not just managers," Kurien mentioned.3

SANKALPAALUMNI SPEAKKUMAR GAURAV (BATCH 2002 - 2004)Life is all about doing things differently and taking up the challenges head on. July2002 is the time, when a small town boy (that's me ) landed in namma garden citywith the similar thoughts and loads of dreams, but like many of you, there was nobody to tell what to do and how. Alien to the place and language, I learnt myselfeverything at my Gurukul 'MSRIM' which became integral part of my life.Reason, I decided to make these 2 years of life in MSRIM productive &memorable, come what may. It's time for me to share those experiences that might be helpful for you in order to create a productive and memorabletime, because trust me; whether you like it or not, this time is never gonna come back in your life. Some mantras mighthelp you. So here we go...1. Answer the question, “Why am I going to college?”2. Set clear goals for each class.3. Triage ruthlessly. Optimize.4. Get an early start to each day.5. Reclaim wasted time during your classes.6. Learn material the very first time it's presented.7. Master advanced memory techniques.8. Have some serious fun!Challenge yourself academically, but give yourself plenty of time for fun as well. Don't squander your leisure timehanging around doing nothing. Go out and do something active that will blow off steam and increase your energy.Develop hobbies, time pass if you do not have. Learn musical instruments, go to gym, play cricket, go with your gangof bikers to Nandi hills, and many more things you can do. Caution, do not copy others. Be Yourself. That's the realfun. This advice centers on making your college experience as rich and memorable as possible. I'm very grateful for theexperience because it showed me just how much more effective we can be when we push ourselves beyond ourcomfort zones. It taught me to keep setting goals beyond what I feel certain I can accomplish. Many times what weassume to be impossible just isn't. We only think it is.7

Management Lessons I learnt from the Animal KingdomSANKALPALeadership:This aspect, almost undoubtedly comes to us from the massive lions thatroam the Masai Mara. The Male Lion is the king and has to prove hisauthority to anyone who dares to challenge him. In reward, he gets to holdon to the coveted leadership role. He has to perform or perish, and if hedoes perish, a new leader takes charge. The kingdom must always have aking and similarly, a company must always have a leader or leaders.Lesson: To be a leader, you have to be the best and learn to stay the best.Team Work:Killer whales or Orcas are a prime example to show a fine effort of teamwork. Every year, blue whales travel with their young off the westerncoast of North America towards the artic. Orcas usually hunt in groups. Anorca is only a third the size of an adult blue whale, but by using the teamand coordination they successfully divert mother and calf in differentdirections and achieve their objective.Lions and hyenas also exhibit team work very well in the sense that theycan take down prey many times their individual size by using team work.Lesson: Team work can help you tackle issues one cannot handle individually and also can help efficiency, butcoordination is crucial.Vision:Vision means to have a clear view of all things ahead, good or bad. Who better then to tell us about this than TheGiraffe. A clear vision of the surroundings and future can help in utilizing opportunities ideally and avoiding dangers.Lesson: Without vision, you cannot move forward and are also exposed to dangers.9

SANKALPATiming:Being at the right place at the right time can be the difference between success and failure. In the case of the Nilecrocodile, it can mean the difference between life and death. Every year, millions of wildebeest cross the Nile Riverfrom the Serengeti to the masaiMara in search of food. It is precisely at the few selected places (where crossing ispossible due to shallowness of the river) that hundreds of crocodiles lie in wait. This may their only meal for nearlyyear ahead and so missing out on the timing can be fatal.Lesson: Timing is a most important part of execution of plans, as accuracy and efficiency can get affected.Speed:It is not enough to do the right things, but also important to do the right things fast. In a world obsessed with speed andaccuracy, the elegant and super quick cheetah shows us just how it is done. With a build not very substantial incomparison to its other cat-family members, cheetahs make up for power with speed.Lesson: Speed can be the difference between good and great performances, so while we must ensure accuracy, speed isalso important.Organizational hierarchy:Every organization must be arranged to ensure smooth working. This can be seen evidently from the food chain thatnature follows. It is important to have such a structure so that the organization can improve and continue for a longtime. A more visible example can be seen by looking at elephant herd structure or how a pride of lions communicate.Lesson: Defined structural hierarchies helps an organization move forward quickly and achieve goals efficiently.10

SANKALPADominance by size:Dominance. The word signifies a certain amount of respect and power that is bestowed by those with this specialability. This when coupled with size can make life comparatively easier for an organization, because, as theorganization gets bigger, the lesser competitors it has.Lesson: The organization must grow and grow such that it eliminates competition while also accommodating forlearning and flexibility.Character:Being one with the organization is important, but equally important to be one apart from the crowd. This means to auniqueness of character that will help add weight to your presence in the organization. This precisely what birds likepeacocks, animals like chimpanzees, gorillas etc. teach us.Lesson: Be one with the crowd, but be one who brings value to the crowd also. There is a job for everyone:Certain people would like to do certain jobs depending on their interests. But there are certain jobs that are not sospecial but need to be done as well and also should be given the same respect. In the wild, this is where vultures comein to the picture. If they did not do a good job of scavenging the forests, the place would be nothing short of an infesteddump yard. Similarly in an organization, support jobs may not be a job of choice, but should be done as respectfully ascore jobs.Lesson: A good manager is one who recognizes the jobs that devoid of glamour or pride, but also knows theimportance of it for the benefit of the organization and does it.Socializing and Networking:An important part of management is to be connected- connected to the world around us and people in it. This will becrucial in updating knowledge and also learning of better opportunities available. Elephants, dolphins and herdanimals (grazers) like wildebeest, zebra are few animals known to be very good at socializing and networking.Lesson: staying connected in a globalized world in crucial for survivalVinay YadavPGDM ( Autonomous )Batch 2012-1411
