alaska land+sea journey tipsusing mobility aids, since they would have no way ofgetting by a scooter left in a hallway. For this reason,Holland America Line has size and weight guidelinesfor scooters. If you plan on bringing a scooter onthe vessel, please contact our Access & ComplianceDepartment. Certain ship transfer operations (i.e.during tendering and at the gangways) may not be fullyaccessible to wheelchairs or scooters. When a shipis unable to dock, guests are taken ashore on smallerboats called tenders. Some guests with limited mobilitymay find it difficult to embark or disembark the shipat certain times while at dock or while tenderingdue to steep gangways and steps, particularly duringlow or high tide. Also please note that scooters andwheelchairs which are more than 100 pounds withoutthe battery are not allowed to be transferred from theship to tender and/or from tender to shore. For persons not capable of walking on their own,the use of a wheelchair will be the primary mobilityassistance aid for getting on and off the ship. Situationsmay occur in which guests with limited mobility maynot be able to go ashore at the time they desire or maybe unable to go ashore at all in certain ports. For thesafety of all concerned, the Captain shall make the finaldetermination regarding the carrying of guests withmobility impairments and their mobility assistancedevice (wheelchair, scooter, walker, etc.), taking intoaccount all appropriate matters including, but notlimited to, weather conditions, ship’s location, weightof the guest or his or her mobility device, etc. Whileevery effort is made to assist guests, we are unableto provide staff members who can spend all or mostof their time working with a single guest in order toaddress ongoing special needs. Guests who require thatlevel of care will need to travel with a companion whois able to provide them with the assistance necessary.Certain third-party transfer and shore excursionsfacilities may not be fully accessible to guests withdisabilities. Although we endeavor to make surethese companies comply with legal requirements, wecannot guarantee all are able to provide services andfacilities that are accessible to persons with disabilities. For detailed, up to date information on accessibilityofferings and limitations involving shore excursions, westrongly recommend contacting our Shore ExcursionsDepartment prior to embarkation at 1-888-425-9376 (orlocally at 1-206-626-7320).It is essential that we be notified of any special medical, physical or other requirements you may have (includingwhether you intend to bring a scooter, power chair orwheelchair with you) as soon as possible, preferablyat the time of booking, so that we may make our besteffort to accommodate you. Guests who are unableto care for their own basic needs (e.g. dressing, eatingand attending safety drills) MUST have a capabletraveling companion. In limited situations (either onboard or ashore), we may find it necessary to ask anindividual to make alternative travel arrangements, suchas if an individual with a disability is unable to satisfycertain specified safety and other criteria, even whenprovided with appropriate auxiliary aids and services. The medical staff on board is not available for dailycare unless an individual is hospitalized in the ship’sMedical Center.Guests traveling on Land+Sea Journeys to theYukon will fly between Dawson City and Fairbanks. The planes utilized for these flights are not able toaccommodate power chairs or motorized scooters dueto weight capacity limitations. Additionally, passengerswill board their plane and will be required to negotiateapproximately 25 steps to board the flight. Limitedassistance is available for boarding on these flights;guests who require assistance should contact ourAccess & Compliance Department well in advance ofdeparture, preferably at the time of booking.Airports: With the exception of arrangements forDawson City in the Yukon, wheelchair assistance that isrequested for airports must be done directly through theairline. Holland America Line is not able to arrange forwheelchair assistance at airports.Accessible Transfers: It is important that our Access& Compliance Department is advised as far in advanceas possible, preferably at the time of booking, if yourequire lift equipped transportation in order to arrangefor an appropriate motorcoach to be assigned to yourLand+Sea Journey and any airport transfers youhave booked.
