6 th Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management“CDM: Reflection, Introspection, Moving Forward “Hyatt Regency, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad5 th – 9 th December, 2011CONFERENCE PROGRAMMEWelcome to the 6 th Caribbean Conference onCOMPREHENSIVE DISASTER MANAGEMENTThe Caribbean’s premier conference on Disaster Risk Management! The Annual Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management is the region’s premier event on disaster risk management. Organized by theCoordinating Unit of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) in collaboration with its partners, the Conference is our region’s largestgathering of professionals in the fields of disaster management and professionals from sectoral and thematic fields who have specific responsibilities in this area.Attending this event is an excellent opportunity to improve disaster risk management awareness and exchange information on good practices, while buildingstronger professional networks.Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) is the Caribbean brand of Disaster Risk Management and contributes to the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015,a blue print for global actions in Disaster Risk Reduction. In that regard, the Conference is a regional event of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction(ISDR) global platform and is structured to promote good practice, share ongoing research and chart the way forward for the advancement of CDM in theCaribbean.Recent events in the Bahamas, Haiti, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan signal the continued importance of prioritizing the management of disaster risk. The increase in the frequency of these disasters and their associated damage in the region results from growing vulnerability, and reflects changing climatepatterns. These trends made it necessary for the region to break the cycle of destruction and reconstruction and address the root causes of vulnerability, ratherthan merely treating its symptoms when disasters happen.* * * * * * * * * *The 6 th Caribbean Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management celebrates the achievement of 20 years of institutionalized disaster risk management inthe region. The Conference will assist in charting the way forward beyond the current regional 2007-2012 strategy on Comprehensive Disaster Management. This year’s conference will be convened underthe theme“CDM: Reflection, Introspection,Moving Forward”Reflection: An opportunity to look back at the genesis of institutionalized disaster management in the Caribbeanregion, celebrate successes and give careful consideration to those gaps which remainIntrospection: A space to examine thoughts and perspectives on where we are today in the agendaof disaster risk managementM oving Forward: Distilling spaces of opportunity and repositioning of theComprehensive Disaster Management agendaPage 1 – Version 10 (Updated 28 November, 2011)
