These involve an exercisesession per week, under the supervision of a physiotherapist and the cardiac educator.Assessment against objectiveThe <strong>NT</strong>DH&CS funds a wide variety of non-government organisations to deliver specificpreventive programs. These organisations play a key role in providing these services.Unfortunately, funding is often project-specific and time-limited. This results in limited long-termbenefits for some programs, and little time to monitor progress.3.5.4 Intersectoral Action For <strong>Health</strong>y LivingObjective 10: There will be intersectoral action promoting good nutrition, adequateenvironmental health standards, greater physical activity, safe alcohol consumption andnon-smoking. Such intersectoral action will take a whole-of-life approach supportingmothers, infants, children, adults and the elderly to remain healthy.A number of legislative changes have taken place since the <strong>NT</strong><strong>PCD</strong>S to support changes toalcohol consumption and a reduction in child sexual abuse and its underlying causes. Proposedchanges to the 2003 Liquor Act and a new Antisocial Behaviour Act in 2005 will decrease thesupply of alcohol by regulating its sale, provision, promotion, and availability, while new dryareas, alcohol management plans and Alcohol Courts are designed for harm minimisation andreduction in demand (2) . Reporting of child sexual abuse is already mandatory under theCommunity Welfare Act, and the 2007 Wild/Anderson Inquiry into the Protection of AboriginalChildren from Sexual Abuse is in the process of canvassing other legislative, educational andremedial options (2) .In the lead-up to the <strong>PCD</strong>S, Weeramanthri suggested the development of „Intersectoral Taskforceon Primary Prevention‟ or an „Intersectoral Taskforce to Promote Wellness and <strong>Health</strong>y Living‟ (75) .This body however, was never formed. The major body that was set up by the <strong>NT</strong> Governmentfor intersectoral action for healthy living was the <strong>NT</strong> Chronic Disease Network – a network ofcommunity and government bodies working with chronic diseases, supported by administrativestaff situated within the <strong>NT</strong>DH&CS.An evaluation of the Chronic Disease Network was undertaken in 2000, it noted that the CDNhad:Chapter 3: Progress Against <strong>PCD</strong>S Objectives – <strong>Evaluation</strong> of the <strong>NT</strong> Preventable Chronic Disease <strong>Strategy</strong> 2007 67
