RT – VERTICAL CENTRIFUGAL IMMERSION PUMPSINNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY MAKES THE DIFFERENCETHE PERFECT SOLUTIONIn this area of use too, the search for even better andmore perfect solutions has given rise to an unsurpassedtechnical standard from which our customers profit.SONDERMANN vertical centrifugal immersion pumpsboast robust, practical construction and design. Thanks tothe use of a variety of materials, the components in contactwith the medium are insensitive to both corrosion andchemicals. Other design-related advantages are safety inthe event of running dry (without intermediate bearings),the low space requirement and individual conformity tocustomer-specific installation flange dimensions.SONDERMANN vertical centrifugal immersion pumps aredesigned for vertical use in non-pressurised tanks, opencontainers or pits. They have proved to be extremely successfulin transporting and circulating pure, slightly contaminatedor abrasive media, aqueous solutions, suspensions or liquid mixtures.THE MEDIASONDERMAN vertical centrifugal immersion pumpsare special designed for acids, caustic solutions, mixtures, solvents, alkaline degreasing baths, electrolytic baths, photochemicals, radioactive, sterile or particularly valuableliquids, foodstuffs and many other low-viscosity media.THE UTILIZATIONConsequently, SONDERMANN vertical centrifugalimmersion pumps are successfully used in both mechanicaland systems engineering as well as in the chemicalsand pharmaceuticals industry, environ mental and processengineering, water and waste water treatment and in thetextiles and foodstuffs industry. But that’s not all. Expertsalso rely on SONDERMANN Series RT pumps for fittingout etching and cleaning systems, refrigeration machines, solar systems and in the photographic and electroplatingindustries.PUMPS FOR INDIVIDUAL DEMANDSDuring the project planning phase (e.g. of electrolyticplants), SONDERMANN defines interfaces and worksout the design of requested special features in closecollaboration with the customer. In all SONDERMANN centrifugal pumps, the pump, motor and frequency converter form onecompact unit. This allows small dimensions, increasesoperational readiness and reduces costs. The frequencyconverters are available in various versions. Control isoptionally possible via: Terminal strip, analog input, serial interface, potentiometer, control panel, field bus(Profibus, etc.)Thanks to advances in performance electronics, highperformancefrequency converter units are now availablefor controlling and regulating the speed of threephaseasynchronous motors. These variable-speeddrives permit a centrifugal pump to be adjusted to suitthe particular requirements of an individual application, and enable power consumption to be reduced. Thisenables every desired operating point to be reached, right up to the load limit of the pump or motor. Lowenergy consumption and a lack of superfluous controlvalves save costs, with the result that the high purchaseprice of a variable-speed centrifugal pump is recoveredwithin a very short time. Centrifugal pumps are designatedas an application with square torque. This meansthat the speed and capacity ratio is cubic. If the speed isreduced, the load is reduced much more. For example,if the speed is reduced by 50 %, only 12 % of the capacityis still required! If the frequency converter is integrated in the terminalbox, the EMC regulations have been fulfilled and thereis no need for the adjustment of an external converter. The unit consisting of the frequency converter, threephasemotor and centrifugal pump is delivered ready toconnect and pre-programmed.In all, far less space is required for new installations. In the case of moderni sations, it is possible to makeuse of all the advantages of a frequency converter inthe existing process.DELIVERY HEIGHT HH InstallationWater 20 °CFLOW RATE QThanks to the variety of possible external control signalsfor speed adjustment, this compact system can be directlyincorporated into the plant’s higher-order control systems. The converter electronics allow soft start-up and soft runoutof the centrifugal pump via programmable ramp runtimes. By defining maximum and minimum output frequencieson the motor side and by masking out any resonancefrequencies that arise, it is possible to optimally adjustthe centrifugal pump to the respective application.7

THE PERFECT PUMP-DRIVEThe advantages of the variable-speed drive integrated in the motor:• Energy saving• Fluid control to suit your requirements• Space-saving drive• No power loss in the switch cabinet by the FC• Less installation work• The pump is delivered ready to connectand pre-programmed• No long, cost-intensive, shieldedmotor cables• No separate EMC filter• Gentle pumping of the medium• No heating-up of the pumpedmedium by energy dissipation• No external motor circuit breakersthanks to integrated motor protection functionsINTERNATIONAL MAINS VOLTAGES AND FREQUENCIESWest Europa East Europa Middle East Far East North America Central America South America Africa50 Hz 50 Hz 50 Hz 50 Hz 50 Hz 50 Hz230/400 V 230/400 V 220/380 V 230/400 V 220/380 V 220/380 V500 V 690 V 230/400 V 220/380 V 127/220 V690 V 240/415 V 200/346 V 240/415 V240/415 V100/200V60 Hz 60 Hz 60 Hz 60 Hz220/380 V 120/240 V 115/200 V 220/380 V254/440 V 265 /460 V 220/380 V 277/480 V110/120 V 277/480 V 254/440 V 115/ 200 V575 V600 VInstallation instructionsIn order to guarantee safe operation of vertical centrifugalimmersion pumps, the following instructions must be followedduring the planning and installation phases:A Thread length, suction side (for screwing onan extension pipe)L Immersion depthVL Extension pipe, suction side (max. 500 mm)X Minimum distance between the suction connectorand the tank bottomY Lowest permissible liquid level during any pumpstart-up. VERTICAL CENTRIFUGAL IMMERSION PUMPS AND FILTER UNITSCLEAN PROCESSESFor a number of applications, filter elements arerequired for ”clean” processes. Of course,SONDERMANN can also supply pumps and filtersin a combined and compact configuration as asingle unit, mounted on an installation flange. Here, the units are optimally configured to yourparticular application, and are delivered readyfor operation. In terms of their construction, allfilter housings are designed in such a way thatthey are equally suitable for holding cartridge, plate, bag and active carbon inserts. Quickchangefilter housings are available in 2 sizesfor short downtimes during maintenance intervals:SF1 and SF3.Series RT-FI covers a wide performance range forthe filtration of all galvanic electrolytes, and alsonickel zinc, currentless nickel and currentlesscopper. Depending on the application (safetydevices are currently already installed on theplant), all universal filter housings can be fittedwith a cover safety switch. Three different filtersizes with many different filter elements areavailable for combination with our vertical centrifugalimmersion pumps. Clamping screws areused to secure the filter cover. These filters arecharacterised by a compact design as well as bythe possibility of using them at high pressuresand high temperatures.Vertical centrifugalimmersion pump RT1to RT5, combinedwith universal filterhousing.26

Two different filter sizes withmany different filter elements are available forcombination with our vertical centrifugal immersionpumps.Quick-change filters are fitted with two safety switchesas standard. These prevent operation of thefilter without the filter cover or with it open.Duringthe project planning phase (e.g. of electrolyticplants), SONDERMANN defines interfaces andworks out the design of requested special featuresin close collaboration with the customer. Thecustomer receives an individual, ready-to-installfunction module. The units are optimally configuredto your particular application, and are deliveredassembled and ready for operation.Vertical centrifugalimmersion pump RT1to RT5, combinedwith quick changefilter housing.28

ELECTRONIC PROTECTIONFOR CENTRIFUGAL PUMPSElectronic monitoring of motor currents protects thepump from dry running, overheating and overload. If the above mentioned operating states are not absolutelyimpossible with your installation, you should usean electronic process monitor to switch off the pumpbefore it is damaged. Such monitors will not only avoiddamage to the pump, but also downtime and costsresulting thereof. At the same time, the monitor checksthe pumping process for the set delivery rate. Oncethe cause of a malfunction is eliminated, the pump isimmediately ready to continue operation. The processmonitor is easy to install into the pump’s power supplyunit. As it is not necessary to build it into pipe runs, this process monitor also is ideal to retrofit existinginstallations. Four different types of process monitorsare available:RPR CONTROL 100-1to be built into control cabinets (mounted on top-hat rail)without programming unit.RPR CONTROL 100-2to be built into control cabinets (mounted on top-hat rail)with integrated programming unit.RPR Control 100-1 RPR Control 100-2RPR CONTROL 100-3Field device with power section of up to 4.0 kW (up to7.5 kW optionally available), mounted in an IP 65 casingfor installation in the field (e.g.at the filter), complete withindicating lamps and push-button but without programming unit.SEPARATE PROGRAMMING UNITRPR-Control 100-3Hand-held appliance with cable and plug to programme theswitching thresholds of RPR-Control 100-1 and RPR-Control 100-3.FUNCTIONAn overload controller with analogue output monitors the actualpower of the pump motor. There are four switching thresholdsdefined:• dry-running (fault, the motor is switched off);• overheating (fault, the motor is switched off);• overload (fault, the motor is switched off);• filter contaminated (warning).separate programming unitThe switching thresholds are user-programmable.Also included is a real-time clock with elapsed-timemeter, e. g. to monitor maintenance intervals.29
