Appendix 3CORE COMPETENCY TRAININGIn order to obtain a SIA licence <strong>for</strong> a front-line security role, you will need to show that youhave received the approved standard of training <strong>for</strong> the particular job <strong>for</strong> which you seek alicence.The training requirement does not apply to non front-line staff, who will need to pass only theidentity and criminal record check.In setting standards <strong>for</strong> training, the SIA has considered the changing roles of those alreadyemployed within the industry and the need <strong>for</strong> improved skills and knowledge.The training qualification includes conflict management and communication skills, which areregarded as essential <strong>for</strong> all front-line security roles.The SIA does not deliver training courses, award qualifications, or provide funding. However,it has endorsed specialist ‘awarding bodies’ to award qualifications and approve trainingcompanies on its behalf.If you are a (PSS) CCTV, Cash & Valuables in-transit, or Close Protection operative, you willneed to receive specialist training in order to apply <strong>for</strong> your licence. Please see the SIAwebsite <strong>for</strong> updates on the training specification <strong>for</strong> CCTV, CVIT and CP and keyholding.Training <strong>for</strong> Security <strong>Guards</strong>Core competency training <strong>for</strong> Security <strong>Guards</strong> is delivered in two stages as follows:Part 1: Knowledge based training and assessment• Duration: 22½ hours• Role and responsibilities of security guards• Customer care and social skills• Fire safety• Health and safety• Dealing with incidents and emergencies• The law (civil and criminal)• Procedures <strong>for</strong> the control of keys and equipment• Assignment instructions• ReportingPart 2: Practical scenario based training and assessment• Duration: 7½ hours• Communication skills• Conflict managementTraining can be delivered over four days with an average course day of 7½ hours.
