Appendix 3CORE COMPETENCY TRAININGIn order to obtain a SIA licence for a front-line security role, you will need to show that youhave received the approved standard of training for the particular job for which you seek alicence.The training requirement does not apply to non front-line staff, who will need to pass only theidentity and criminal record check.In setting standards for training, the SIA has considered the changing roles of those alreadyemployed within the industry and the need for improved skills and knowledge.The training qualification includes conflict management and communication skills, which areregarded as essential for all front-line security roles.The SIA does not deliver training courses, award qualifications, or provide funding. However,it has endorsed specialist ‘awarding bodies’ to award qualifications and approve trainingcompanies on its behalf.If you are a (PSS) CCTV, Cash & Valuables in-transit, or Close Protection operative, you willneed to receive specialist training in order to apply for your licence. Please see the SIAwebsite for updates on the training specification for CCTV, CVIT and CP and keyholding.Training for Security GuardsCore competency training for Security Guards is delivered in two stages as follows:Part 1: Knowledge based training and assessment• Duration: 22½ hours• Role and responsibilities of security guards• Customer care and social skills• Fire safety• Health and safety• Dealing with incidents and emergencies• The law (civil and criminal)• Procedures for the control of keys and equipment• Assignment instructions• ReportingPart 2: Practical scenario based training and assessment• Duration: 7½ hours• Communication skills• Conflict managementTraining can be delivered over four days with an average course day of 7½ hours. Where to get your trainingThere are currently two awarding bodies who are authorised to provide the security guardtraining qualifications required for SIA licensing. They will provide you with the details oftraining organisations that offer the course.
