However,CCTV operators need a thorough understanding of the specific legislation that affectstheir job and the implications of the work they do. This includes:• The Data Protection Act 1998 and the In<strong>for</strong>mation Commissioner’s Code ofPractice <strong>for</strong> CCTV operators• The Human Rights Act 2000 and its implications <strong>for</strong> the use of CCTV in respectof the rights of privacy and exemptions• The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 which has significantimplications <strong>for</strong> the operation of CCTV systems in terms of directed or targetedsurveillance at the request of another. The Surveillance Commissionersresponsible <strong>for</strong> ensuring compliance with the Act have been carrying out30
