First NationsPolicyFor a deceased native off-reserve who was a member of an Indianband and was a resident on an Indian Reserve within the last 12months funeral expenses would be an eligible cost under IWS (IndianWelfare Services). An application should be completed.Municipalities receive 100% provincial funding for providing funeralservices.Inmates of a Federal Penitentiary/Federal Halfway HousePolicyIf the deceased was an inmate of a Federal Penitentiary/FederalHalfway House on the date of death, the Federal GovernmentCorrectional Services is responsible for the funeral service costs.However, if the deceased was a resident of Peel, prior to theincarceration, and the next of kin, or a person previously designatedby the deceased, claims the remains, an application can be made bythe family to have a funeral/burial held in Peel.If the funeral and burial is to be held in Peel then the cost for thefuneral service and transportation costs to return the body will becovered by OW.17
