Determining Eligibility for Funeral AssistanceIntroductionThere are a number of factors unique to determining eligibility forassistance with funeral, burial or cremation services, these include;• Assets,• Income,• Residency and• Meeting the conditions for the provision of an OWIP funeralservice as per the policies and procedures outlined below.The CPU CW will review all the circumstances of the case todetermine eligibility and next steps.ServicesAlreadyRenderedRequests for assistance with the cost for funeral services that havealready been rendered are not considered by OW.However, assistance may be considered on a case by case basis inexceptional circumstances.Examples of exceptional circumstances include, but are not limited to:• An administrative error in the processing of the application;• Compassionate groundsThe eligibility criteria and maximum asset levels of assistance for eachtype of funeral service apply whether the request was initiated prior toor after the funeral service is completed.If an exceptional circumstance has been approved we will only pay upto our approved maximum rates.• Peel will not accept responsibility for funeral service costswhere financial arrangements for an enhanced funeral weremade prior to requesting assistance.• Duplication of funeral services, i.e. having both acrematorium and a funeral home service, will not beapproved• Peel will not cover additional costs such as flowers, obituarynotices, cards or receptions,8
