Active Learning and Teaching MethodsCREATIVE MATRIXSkills•••Being CreativeThinking, Decision-Making, Problem-SolvingWorking with OthersWhat is it?• This activity encourages pupils to think creatively about a series of (hypothetical)scenarios, options, ideas and events. It stimulates thinking and problem-solvingskills and may allow pupils to see issues from fresh perspectives. Pupils work ingroups to explore alternatives and to build constructively and creatively on the ideasof others.How does it work?1. Pupils are presented with a matrix of possible scenarios based on a particularissue:CREATIVE MATRIX – My CommunityProblem:What?alcohol/drug abusesmoking racism violence pollutionPeople bywhom?OAP’sparentsethnicminoritiesfamiliesteensPlacewhere?at work at school in town at home on holiday2. Pupils might be asked to identify, in their opinion, what the most likely and leastlikely scenarios are, choosing one option from each of the rows above and puttingthem together. For example:• Most likely = alcohol abuse – teens – on holiday• Least likely = violence – OAPs – at work3. Pupils may be asked to justify their choices when comparing and contrastingresponses with other groups, and to explore whether there are times when eventheir least likely scenario may possibly happen;19

This activity might be used as a planning tool to stimulate creativity with a range ofideas:CREATIVE MATRIXWhat might be the most lucrative food business?Type: Indian French British Chinese ItalianPeople: OAP’s professionalsethnicminoritiesfamiliesteensHow?on aconveyerbeltmeals onwheelsdrive-thrupic‘n’mixdo-it-yourselfat a servicestationOnce again, pupils might be asked to choose the most and least lucrative potentialbusiness idea. For example:• Most lucrative = Indian – for professionals – on a conveyer belt• Least lucrative = French – for teens – meals on wheels5. A debrief afterwards might ask pupils to consider their work within groups – weregroups able to build on ideas? How did the groups structure their discussions? Wasthere a facilitator? Was agreement reached, and if so, how?6. This activity might lead on to further exploration of relevant topics. Tools such asConsider All Factors, Plus-Minus-Interesting, Other People’s Views, and OpinionFinders may be beneficial in order to consolidate and deepen pupils’ understandingof key issues arising from the Creative Matrix.20
