<strong>Active</strong> <strong>Learning</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Teaching</strong> <strong>Methods</strong>LIFELINESSkills• ThinkingWhat is it?• This activity can be used as an icebreaker <strong>for</strong> new groups, as a team-buildingactivity, as an introduction to a particular topic or as a first step which may lead tofuture planning, decision-making or extended discussion. It encourages pupils toreflect <strong>and</strong> think on their own experiences be<strong>for</strong>e comparing with others.How does it work?1. Everyone receives a ‘Lifeline’ sheet with different ages noted along the line.2. On the Lifeline, pupils document experiences in their lives since they were born thatare relevant to the topic under discussion.Icebreaker:• My favourite toys at different ages.• My favourite TV programmes at different ages.• My favourite holidays at different ages.Topic: Rights <strong>and</strong> Responsibilities• When I was allowed to make decisions.• When I was deemed old enough to try new things.3. Once completed, pupils could share their experiences with others, or a large lifelinecould be placed on a wall <strong>and</strong> an example from everyone’s individual lifeline placedon it.4. Pupils could, as a team-building exercise, discuss the similarities <strong>and</strong> differenceswhich emerge from their documented lifelines.5. The lifeline activity could be used to stimulate further discussion. Why, <strong>for</strong> example,are certain rights granted at 12,14,16,18,21 etc?6. Pupils might also specify a particular age <strong>and</strong> run an Ideas Avalanche. To cite aninstance, what decisions should an 8 year old be allowed to make <strong>and</strong> why?45
