MARPol: Annex VI
In this issue we conclude our series
on the “International Convention
for the Prevention of Pollution
from Ships” with Annex VI. This
last Annex deals with regu lations
for the prevention of air pollution
from ships. It comprises rules for
the construction of ships as well
as operational guidelines. When it
comes to air pollution from ships,
there are many different substances
that have to be taken into account.
Therefore the regulations
deal with these substances and
their sources separately. Ozone
Depleting Substances are one
example. They can emerge from
air conditionings, refrigerators or
provision cooling plants. These
devices have to be monitored
carefully to prevent any leakage
1
of harmful substances. Maintenance
works, leaks or refilling of
this equipment needs to be recorded
in the “Ozone Depleting
Substances Log Book”. Nitrogen
Oxides (NOx), which are released
when burning fuel, are also a concern.
To minimize those emissions,
changes to new engines
have to be carried out, e.g. by
installing common rail devices to
control fuel injection. The limits for
these emissions are continually
being reduced. Sulphur Oxides
(SOx) are another example. They
are created when burning bunker.
These emissions can either
be reduced by installing special
filters (called scrubbers) in the
exhaust system or by using only
low sulphur fuel. At present IMO
allows a worldwide maximum limit
of 3,5% of sulphur in the fuel. Yet,
there are special emission controlled
areas, like the North Sea, the
Baltic and––as of this summer––
North America, where the maximum
limit is only 1%. As of January
2015 this limit will be lowered
even further to 0.1%, while the
worldwide limit is planned to be
0.5% starting in 2020. There are
also regulations concerning volatile
organic compounds. These
deal with emissions from cargo
oil tanks of tankers. An efficient
method to monitor these emissions
is to use a vapour collecting
return system that pumps the gas
from the ship’s empty tank back to
the onshore oil tank while loading.
The winter in Europe started late, but it brought a lot of ice. Here are some
of the best winter impressions we received from our colleagues on the MV
1. When did you start working
for a& a and why?
After I graduated from Maritime
Academy in Szczecin in 2002
I was looking for a job that would
allow me to work in the office
but also periodically on board a
ship. Therefore in May 2003
I started working with A&A Shipping
Co. Ltd.
2. What exactly are your
responsibilities?
My responsibilities are to source
officers and ratings for BRISE and
to maintain a good pool of ex crew.
We are the link between seafarers
and the owner. In addition it is my
job to keep the office running as
efficiently as possible.
3. What do you like best about
your job?
What I like best is that every day
brings something different. There
are so many various matters to
deal with that there is no place for
boredom or routine.
4. When you travel, which part
of the world do you like most
and why?
There are still many places in
Poland I feel I need to see.
However if I could go to Odessa
in Ukraine or Saint Petersburg in
Russia I would be very happy.
5. What input would you like to
read in upcoming editions of
news@brIsE?
I do like BRISE ABOARD where I
can read about BRISE ships, life
on board and about their crew.
The photo gallery with some
snap shots of everyday life is a very
good supplement to this.
In this part we introduce
colleagues from all different
parts of BRISE. If you have any
suggestions who might be next
in this column, please send us
an email to news@brise.de
