4 BRISE ASHORE
DoCKIngs
There were three dockings at
the beginning of 2012. The MV
CEMBAY arrived at the Husum
Shipyard for her intermediate
survey on the 17th January and
entered dry dock upon arrival
for a periodical bottom survey.
The MV CEMISLE was docking
in Swinoujscie in January for an
intermediate and a bottom survey.
There was also some maintenance
work on deck and the
engine exhaust was overhauled.
And finally, the MV KOLLUND is
due for a periodical bottom survey
and her intermediate class survey
by the end of April at the latest.
Maintenance work on the ballast
water tanks is also scheduled.
learning from disaster: BNWAS
In our series “Learning from disaster” about different regulations and their backgrounds, Jens
E. Borowski provides you with some essentials on the BNWAS (Bridge Navigational Watch
Alarm System):
All BRISE vessels
now have
to be equipped
with and have
to make use of
a Bridge Navigational
Watch
Alarm System
(BNWAS). Its
purpose is to monitor the presence
and awareness of the officer
on watch (OOW) on the
bridge and to alert another qualified
OOW if the responsible OOW
is unable to fulfil his duties. After
a series of incidents in which
New charter
The economic situation remains
rather difficult. Luckily all our vessels
are still underway, yet it is
becoming more and more challenging
to obtain new charter contracts
and rates are in any event
far from being reasonable. As of
20th february the MV GLUECKS
vessels collided with nonmoving
and wellknown objects (like islands),
it was suspected that the
cause of these accidents lay in
the fact that the OOW was either
not present, asleep or otherwise
unable to attend to his duties.
Therefore the system frequently
checks on the OOW by making
him press a certain button as a
response to visual and acoustic
alarms. According to SOLAS,
the BNWAS has to be in operation
whenever the ship is at sea.
All BRISE vessels are already
equipped with a BNWAS. By
BURG has a new charter contract
with A.P.MøllerMærsk A/S
until at least the end of May and
possibly until the end of November.
She will be sailing in a service
between the Mediterranean
and West Africa. The MV MIS
SUNDE (MSC LONGONI) and the
right of continuance, the existing
Bridge Alarm Systems or dead
man switch devices may be
used if they comply with the new
regulations. But this has to be
checked for every vessel individually
and the devices may need
to be updated.
Each crew has to make sure
that the system is in good working
order and complies with the
current regulations. If in doubt,
please contact fleet@brise.de.
