Strandgut
This edition’s very special STRAND
GUT was handed to us by Jerzy
Maciejewski 2nd/Mech (MSC
LONGONI) and it takes us back
in time...
“Back in the 70's, a seafarer’s
life was very different from today.
Vessels had numerous crew
members and port stays were
longer. Therefore the crew had
more time to organize various
cultural and social activities in
their leisure time, such as baptisms
at sea when passing the
Equator, pingpong, checkers
and chess tournaments, Sunday
sports, wrestling and even
boxing. These events brought
out many artistic talents among
the seamen, such as painting,
sculpting, writing, and singing
seamen's ballads and melodies
(shanties). And seamen also did
a lot of sports. The picture shows
HAS BEEN SolD
About a year ago, we informed
you that four new vessels joined
the BRISE fleet. The owners of
these specialized projectcargo
and heavylift ships asked us to
take over the management due
to the fact that the previous ship
manager had become insolvent.
In expectation of improved
market conditions in 2011, there
was confidence that all the ships
would have a longterm future in
the BRISE fleet. Regretfully the
freight and charter markets also
in this market segment have become
even more difficult. Both the
vessels’ owners and the financing
banks are unwilling to give further
financial support in uncertain
times. As a result, the first vessel of
the quartet MV KEGNAES, which
was trading under the time charter
name OXL BAMBOO, was sold
sports competition from 1971. It
is the silver medal for the high
jump. The competition was organized
for crews in the port of
Genoa and 62 ships participated.
However, the shipping business
fIgurE of thE Month
to German buyers in December
2011 after one year under BRISE
management. The other three
ships are also being marketed to
potential buyers around the world.
We are presently in a position to
avoid discussions on a sale with
regard to the majority of the ships
in the BRISE fleet. Prices for ships
has changed substantially, affecting
the work and free time
of the crew serving on board.
As a result, some cultivated marine
traditions have unfortunately
been slowly disappearing.”
In the whole brIsE group, there are at present on average about
1,100 transactions in the orderstar program per month.
are also very depressed, similar to
charter rates, and we aim to trade
all vessels until market conditions
allow for a structured and planned
fleet renewal programme in our
strategic BRISE markets.
In order to avoid the danger
of colliding with any objects in
the berthing process, we would
like to add a certain procedure
in our prearrival and departure
checklists, as a BRISE vessel
was in danger of colliding with
a pier recently. Approaching the
berth in dense fog, the crew
changed the range on both
radars down to 0.50 NM. Because
of faulty magnetrons, this
resulted in the failure of both radars.
fortu nately the berth was
well illu minated and the Master
managed to bring the vessel
alongside safely. Yet, to avoid
any situations like this, we kindly
ask you to do the following:
n Please add to the prearrival
and departure checklists to
verify that radars are working
within the low ranges of 0.75,
0.50, and 0.25 NM. Please
make sure that you know how
the radars are performing
before you turn them down in a
dangerous situation like the one
mentioned above.
n Check your maintenance
plan to make sure that magnetrons
are being changed at the
intervals recommended by the
radar’s producer
n If malfunctions are observed
during the tests mentioned
above, initiate an OrderStar
requisition for spare parts or
service to rectify the problem.
