A chat with the Chief
This time we took the opportunity to talk to the MV CEMISLE’s C/E Upali Jayasinghe (46)
Upali Jayasinghe (r.) and superintendent
Markus Hartmann
n@b: Did you always want to
work at sea?
C/E Jayasinghe: Yes, that’s
why I studied Marine Engineering
at the University of Moratuwa in
Sri Lanka.
n@b: How long have you been
working at sea, when did you
become a C/E and how long have
you been working for BRISE?
C/E Jayasinghe: I have been
working at sea for 27 years now
and I became a C/E eight years
ago. In January 2011 I started
working with BRISE and now I
am on my second contract.
n@b: What do you like about
working for BRISE?
C/E Jayasinghe: Working with
BRISE is very nice because we
are like a big family. I can call the
office and there is always someone
I can talk to.
n@b: Where do you live? Do you
have a family?
C/E Jayasinghe: I live in Kandy,
Sri Lanka, and I have two sons
ages 13 and 17.
n@b: Where do you like to sail
best? Which is your favourite
ocean/region of the world and
why?
C/E Jayasinghe: I prefer Asia because
everything is familiar to me
there. The people’s behaviour and
their manners are nearly the same
as in the region I grew up in. Also
the weather is much better there.
n@b: Do you have a favourite port
of call? If so, which one and why?
C/E Jayasinghe: My favourite port
is Singapore because it combines
the best of two worlds. On the one
hand, it is in Asia and, as I said,
that is my favourite region to sail.
On the other hand, everything is
as regulated and controlled as in
the Western ports.
n@b: What do you generally prefer:
container vessels or bulkers?
C/E Jayasinghe: I like to go on
bulkers because everything is
less rushed than on a container
vessel. The port stay is longer and
in most cases the voyages are
longer as well.
n@b: What do you like to do during
your spare time on board/at home?
C C/E Jayasinghe: I like watching
movies and spending time with
my children. I also like to travel and
see new places.
n@b: How did you like the repositioning
journey from the Caribbean
to Poland?
C/E Jayasinghe: I like long journeys
and I did not mind it at all.
Luckily we had very good weather.
But as I prefer the tropical conditions
in the Caribbean, I would
rather have stayed there than
come to Europe in wintertime.
Country ProfIlE:
thE PhIlIPPInEs
In this edition of our series on home
countries of our fellow colleagues,
we’d like to give you a short introduction
to the Philippines, the home
country of six colleagues of the MV
CEMISLE.
name Republic of the Philippines
Population 94 million
Capital Manila
language filipino and English
general Information The Philippines
is an archipelago of about
7,000 islands situated in Southeast
Asia in the Pacific Ocean and
is bordered by Taiwan, Borneo,
Vietnam and Indonesia. Trade,
immi gration and colonization connected
the people on the island
with various cultures such as
Malayan Rajahs and Chinese
in fluences. In 1565 it became a
colony of Spain and thus today
the majority of the population is
Catholic, but the Rajah past also
left a minority of Muslims. In 1902
it became an American colony and
after a brief occupation by Japan, it
became an indepen dent republic in
1946. from 19561986 ferdinand
Marcos established a dictatorship.
In June 2010, Ben igno Aquino III
was elected as the 15th president.
Culture The Philippines is a very
multiethnic country whose various
influences can be seen in all parts
of the culture. The ethnically diverse
population includes indigenous
people, Chinese and Spanish
mestizos. During a naming reform,
many people acquired a Spanish
last name that they were required
to choose from a list. More than
170 languages are spoken there,
including English, Spanish, Tagalog,
different creoles and various
indigenous languages. The country
has a very high rate of literacy and
education is very important to its
people.
A large percentage of the population,
approximately 11 percent,
lives and works outside of the
Philippines.
