start the day off freshTake a deep breath. Fill your lungs with cool outdoor airas you start your day. It’s a brand new day. Repeat this atlunch and when you arrive home…keeping in perspectivethat we can make a conscious choice <strong>to</strong> slow down andjust breathe throughout our day.


focus on the positivesWrite down 3 things that went well <strong>to</strong>day. What wasyour role in it? Do this before you go <strong>to</strong> sleep andreflect on the good things of <strong>to</strong>day. Being gratefulcan enhance your mental well-being.


make time <strong>to</strong> play <strong>to</strong>dayGet outdoors. Play with your kids or your pet. Takea moment just <strong>to</strong> play and rejuvenate. This can be ahealthful way of burning off steam!


loved onesCall 2 people who you feel close <strong>to</strong> or enjoy spendingtime with and thank them for being a part of your life.Expressing and hearing affirmations is very healingand rewarding!


igger picture stuffWhat is meaningful in your life? How do you want <strong>to</strong>make a difference in your community? Jot down one thingyou can do <strong>to</strong>day which will make a difference <strong>to</strong>day.Volunteer? Check on your neighbour who lives alone? Getinvolved in your local church? Pick one thing you will doover the next <strong>21</strong> days.


treat yourselfEat some chocolate, but really experience the taste, smell andtexture. Be mindful of all your senses as you enjoy this treat!Now share a piece of the chocolate with a colleague at workwith a little note saying, “ <strong>Enjoy</strong>, you deserve this treat!”


embrace cultureReflect on your heritage. What part of your cultural rootsdo you still practice? Is it specific traditions or celebrations,foods, faith or spirituality? Embrace your uniqueness andcelebrate your his<strong>to</strong>ry as a valuable part of who you are.


e activeCall up friends and arrange <strong>to</strong> meet at a local park. Bringalong your pets, Frisbee, balls and your favourite snacks.Did you know being active and connecting with others hasreal overall health benefits?


personal resourcesWhat or who has helped you through difficult times in the past?Make a list. Now, add <strong>to</strong> this list what you do for yourself whenfeeling stressed. Keep this list for “when needed”. We all havedifficulties from time <strong>to</strong> time, but knowing what helps us canmake a difference in how quickly we get through it.


learnGo <strong>to</strong> your library or local craft s<strong>to</strong>re and get information ona hobby you’ve always been curious about. Scrapbooking,drawing, pho<strong>to</strong>graphy, gardening…still interest you? Sign upfor a low cost community club or Leisure Guide class <strong>to</strong> try it out.

spiritualitySay a little prayer of thankfulness. Nurturingyour spiritual side not only provides hope andpeacefulness but can encourage us <strong>to</strong> let go ofthings beyond our control and gives us the focus <strong>to</strong>change things we can.


eatheTake 3 minutes <strong>to</strong> focus on your breathing. Get comfortablein your chair (legs uncrossed, arms relaxed by your side).Inhale slowly through your nose (or mouth), count one, two,three; completely fill your lungs. Hold your breath – pause,then exhale through your mouth. Repeat this process for afew minutes and focus on how relaxed you are.


disconnectReally? Yes, <strong>to</strong> stay connected you need <strong>to</strong> disconnect.Turn off all electronics for one hour <strong>to</strong>day (BlackBerry, cellphones, television, computer, video games). Do somethingthat you haven’t done in a while – read a book, write ina journal, play an old-fashioned board game, or visit afriend. <strong>Enjoy</strong> this time without any interruptions.
