Presidents ReportLadies and Gentlemen,I have much pleasure in presenting this report coveringthe activities of the 19/9-80 season.Our first season as a senior grade club ( provisional)must be regarded as a memorable and most successful oneas it marked the beginning of a new era in Weston Creek.The overall performance of the club was . pleasing in almostevery aspect and the fact that our principal objectiveof providing cricket for all was very largely achievedwas very satisfying indeed.Another encouraging feature was the manner in whichmany of the younger players were able to progress throughthe grades and establish themselves in the top teams.The Club possesses a large number of players who are under20 years of age and in addition to those mentioned aboveare many who will not ever play in the higher grade t$amsbut who, hopefully,will be able to enjoy their cricketwith Weston Creek for many years to come.Three of our teams made the final series- the Women'sXI, the 4th. grade and the City & Suburban A-grade Div.2side. While the Women's team was soundly defeated in itssemi-final the other two teams proceeded to contest thefinal in the respective competitions. Tom Porter's 4thslost in an interesting and pleasant match with East Canberrawhile Ray Harding's side drew with Teachers C.C. ina very disappointing game with the premiership going tothe minor premiers- Teachers. Congratulations to Julie,Tom and Ray and their teams, for their successes and forthe manner in which they . represented the Club duringthese important end-of-season fixtures.My congratulations and thanks also to all team captainsfor the way in which they carried out their tasksand their contributions they made to the smooth functioningof the Club. Special thanks are due to the Club Captain,Brian Kensey, for the important role he played inthis transition season and his influence and stature grewas his own form became so dominant in the latter part of

the season- who will forget his brilliant innings in thefinal of the Twilight competition or his commanding centuryagainst City C.C. in the last round of the competition?.A change in the manner of selecting teams was probablythe most successful innovation of the 1979-80 season« Allteam captains were present at the selection meetings togetherwith the Chairman of Selectors. '.This' led to agreater understanding, throughout the teams, of why certainactions were taken and it provided a vital means ofcommunication between the committee and the players whichhad become difficult with so many teams. A further developmentof this system next season could go a long way toovercoming the problem of keeping all members informed.No praise is too high for the great contribution madeto the Club by Chris Harris, the Chairman of Selectors.Hehandled this most important one of the Club's functionswith dedication and sensitivity and stood firm on hispolicy _of encouraging the younger players and the importanceof player attitude.One of the disappointing features of the season wasthe manner .in which practices were conducted.A change inpolicy saw some small improvement but did not solve theproblem of providing meaningful practice sessions.Seriousconsideration should be given to the appointment of apractice organiser to ensure that practices are worthwhileand that players are encouraged to practice allaspects of the game.1021The after-match gatherings at the pavilion at StirlingOval have become a Club tradition - one which has become ,vital to the development of Club spirit' and the good fellowshipthat exist throughout the Club. It is a time 1 whenplayers from all teams can mingle and where young and old,the outstanding and the hard trierspcan feel equally athome. These occassions were as successful as .they I werethis season because of the outstanding organisation > ofLyn and Laurie 0'Mara whojassisted by Marj Nuttall & EricaDerrick, operated the canteen at the pavilion throughoutthe season. The value of their contribution cannot bemeasured in financial terms although the return ' fromtheir efforts was a significant contribution to Club

1021funds, and I offer my grateful thanks to them for thepart they played in making the season a successful andenjoyable one.Despite the heroic efforts and tender loving care ofVice President Pat Flynn and his Grounds Committee andthe occassional use of a heavy hired roller the pitch at'Stirling never really approached the standard required fortop grade cricket.It has now been discovered that thepitch was badly laid initially and that only a thin layeron 'pug' - and that directly onto clay - covered much ofthe square

1021a large outside family area will hopefully preserve theatmosphere that is present now at the oval pavilion.My report would be incomplete if I were not to commendto members the continued, untiring contributions made byour Secretary and Treasurer. This Club is exceedinglyfortunate in having two such outstanding administratorswhose perseverance and dedication have been largely responsiblefor the sound position that the Club now holds.I offer my personal thanks to them for making my positiona relatively easy one.I have been pleased to have had the opportunity toserve as your President again in 1979-80 and I wish allmembers success in the coming season.DonBrookerI » ecretary'sReportLadies and Gentlemen.It is with much satisfaction that I am able to saythat Weston Creek Cricket Club has had a very successfulseasonThe year started with the Annual General Meeting on15th July 1979. Held for the first time on a Sunday morning,the meeting was followed by a champagne luncheon.Over 50 members and prospective members attended the meetingand the luncheon.The management committee met 8 times during the seasonwhen major decisions regarding the affairs of the clubwere made. Meetings of the various sub-committees tookplace regularly during the season.

1021The Club's senior membership rose to 105 while therewere 211 registered junior members and 23 women members.The Club fielded 4 teams in the ACTCA grade competition,three in the Canberra City and Suburban CA competitionone in the ACT Womens CA and 15 teams in the various juniorcompetetions.Detail reports by the Chairmen of the Selection Committee,Junior Cricket Committee and the captains of thedifferent teams appear elsewhere.FUNDRAISINGSUB-COMMITTEEThe Fund raising Sub-committee unce again performed avery valuable service by organising and running the Silva:Circle and ending up making a healthy profit for the ClubIn this regard the Executive extends its special thanksto Erica and John Derrick and the members of the sub-committee.SOCIALSUB-COMMl'TTEE.This year the social side of the club' seems to] have,suffered one way or another. The season started off witha 'Beer and pie' night to announce the captains and teamsfor the first round. The next major function was in Novemberwhen some 450 members and friends attended a dinnerdance at the Teachers Club, when the major prizes of theSilver Circle were drawn.The fortnightly barbecues held at the pavilion in theprevious year were missing, and it is hoped that they arereintroduced next summer.The presentation dinner was the final social functionfor the year. This was attended by 120 members and guestsand was a great success.GROUNDS SUB COMMITTEESubstantial funds were expended on ground •facilitiesthis year. a n e w practice pitch was constructed andduring the winter months it is expected that this pitchwill be covered with artificial turf. Repair and maintenancework is planned for the existing practice pitchesand all three are expected to be ready for the beginning|of next season.

13Whilst the playing area had not been properly laidinitially, the team of Chris Body, Greg Flynn and RichardDrew led by Pat Flynn put in countless hours of work toproduce pitches for every Saturday. The executive thanksthe above members for their help during the last season.ENGLAND vs N.S.W. and WEST INDIES vs A.C.T. GAMES.Two international teams played a game each in Canberraduring the season. West Indies played a one day game againstACT & Southern Districts and England played a threeday game against N.S.W. WCCC played a prominant part insupporting the ACTCA in staging both games. The executivewish to thank the 32 members who came forward to help atthe games.DRAGONSTOUR.The Club played host, on behalf of the ACTCA, to thetouring Dragons, a team of English public schoolboys whichtoured NSW, ACT and Victoria during December '79 andJanuary '80. The team consisted of several players whohave played for the County colts or County Second XI orEnglish minor counties, and were all between 17 and 19years of age. They played two one-day games against theCltfb. The tourists narrowly won both games.The tourists were billetted with families locally. Ourthanks to all those families and the members\who made thefive days of their stay worthwhile.Complete score cards appear on pages 64, 65 and 66. \W.C.C.C.- CAPITAL PERMANENT JUNIOR CRICKET SCHOOLOne hundred and five boys attended the 1980 W.C.C.C.-Capital Permanent Junior-Cricket School. This year thepanel of coaches was increased t'o three with SteveBarnard, the former NSW pace bowler joining Brian Boothand Tom Purcell. Senior players of the Club's first gradeteam also assisted in the coaching.As a gesture towards fostering cricket in countryareas, the Club invited a group of boys from the N.S.W.country town of CoonamblB. They took part in the coachingschooland played a limited over match against a W.C.C.C.boys XI.

14The Club's thanks go to Capital Permanent Co-operativeBuilding Society', without their financial support such aventure would not have been possible. Our thanks also goto Mr. David Bastian the Managing Director and Mr. RayStewart, the General Manager of Capital Permanent, fortheir personal interest in the Club.TWILIGHTCOMPETETIONFor the first time in its history WCCC was invited totake part in the twilight competetion organised by EastCanberra C.C. Limited over cricket is new to the youngclub. In the first round Weston Creek was drawn to playQueanbeyan C.C. and WCCC won the game in an exciting lastover. This gave the Club a place in the final four, andbeat Woden C.C. in the first semi-final.Woden had .5. ballsand 3 wickets to make 1 run for victory.Yet when the lastwicket fell off the last ball of the innings the scoreswere equal.As WCCC. had lost fewer wickets, it qualified forthe final. In a high scoring final Weston Creek lost toWestern District C.C. who made 190. WCCC were 9/144.CANTEENComplete score cards appear on pages 67, 68, 69 and 70.The usual Saturday night meeting place - The bar andCanteen - turned out to be very popular once again. Althoughthe numbers staying behind after the games showed amarginal decline, the profits from bar sales showed aconsiderable upturn. Laurie and Lyn O'Mara who managed thecanteen with the support of a few others deserve congratulations.Afternoon teas at the matches at Stirling Oval were toa high standard. Thanks to efforts of . the same few who"remembered".Finally my thanks go to all those who served in thevarious committees, for a job well done. To Mary who answeredmany telephone calls during the. summer andgenerally put up with a lot in the name of cricket, thankyou.PercySamara-WickramaHon. Secretary

1021Selection Committee ReportThis season the selections did not present theproblems experienced in 1978-79 season. The structure ofthe panel and the procedures adopted went a long way towardspreventing player dissatisfaction which surfaced inthe previous season.The key to the success of the scheme was the directinvolvement of the captains. The captains had two tasksto perform with regard to selections. First to selecttheir team from match to match and secondly and most importantlycommunicate to the players the reasoning behindthe selections, not only in his own team but also in theother teams of the Club. There were a few occasions whenthis communication broke down but it was noticed very quicklyand dealt with immediately. Players must rememberthat all selections not only can,but should be explainedand by talking to the appropriate people any problems inthis area can be settled.As selectors we endeavoured to implement and adhere toclub policy, although at times it was difficult especiallyat the start of the season when errors were made ingrading and during the Christmas break when there was theusual mass exodus from Canberra. The policy itself leftus iif no doubt as to where our responsibilities lay, namelyto our younger players and to provide as many gamesof cricket as possible to all registered and financialmembers of the club. In both areas I believe we were successful,particularly so with the youth policy as at theend of the season over two thirds of the 1st. and 2nd.grade players were under 21. To achieve the second objectivewe introduced the pool system late in the season andwhen understood by the teams, it provided us with.^a fairand equitable method of coping with an excess of playersand at the same time giving a degree of stability in theteams at the crucial stage of the season.Selection meetings were not without their argumentsand controversy and this is to be expected as people (interpretpolicy and guidelines differently. Undoubtly a fewof the points may be debated at the Annual General Meeting.Nevertheless concensus was achieved

1021every selector had for the other's point of view.In terms of success, to an outsider it would seem we 1had very little, seeing we didn't win a premiership. Butin a "losing" club we finished the season happy and harmonious,which in itself is very successful and most rewarding.Finally I would like to thank the Captains ( and theirdeputies who filled in occassionally) for the time theyput into this often thankless task. In particular I wouldlike to thank Ray Harding, Jim and Percy for their workduring my absence at Christmas:Chris HarrisChairman of SelectorsJunior CricketIThe winning of Premierships may have a big bearing onthe success of a Cricket Club during that season, one mayargue; well Weston Creek Juniors failed to win a Premiershipin any of the Divisions {jand this the first time inour Junior Club history), but had a most successful 1979-80 season.Some fifteen teams took part in the junior competetionwith over 200 boys taking part in these teams. The mannerand the sportsmanship in which these boys played the gamewin lose or draw is a credit to their Club and to themany hours put into training these boys by their coaches.Many fine individual performances were achieved, toonumerous to mention in this report.Many of our junior players had the honour of representingA.C.T. against visiting teams throughout the season.Congratulations to all those boys.During the 1979/80 season the boys conducted their ownJunior raffle and worked very hard selling tickets. Theresult proved a huge success.

1021A Junior Coaching Clinic was again conducted by theClub during the Christmas School holidays. Directed byBrian Booth and ably assisted by Tom Purcell this Clinicproved so successful the previous season, that Brian addedanother member to his team in Steve Bernard, a formerN.S.W. pace bowler.Conducted over a week this clinic touched on all aspectsof cricker and watching some of the results , achievedon the playing field, then the senior Club can look forwardto an abundance of very talented junior players comingthrough the ranks.All the coaching would not be possible without the assistanceof Capital Permanent Building Society. To them onbehalf of the Weston Creek Juniors I say a most sincerethank you for your support.Lastly I would like, on behalf of the Junior Committeeto thank all those people who gave up so much of theirtime to coach and organise the boys during the 1979/80season.Lauris EvansChairman Junior Cricket'..CommitteeTIM MORRIS - JUNIOR CRICKETER OF THE YEARCongratulations to Tim Morris on his exceptional featof being named "A.C.T. Junior Cricketer of the Year" forthe second successive year. Tim who has played all ofhis cricket with Weston Creek, had another outstandingseason scoring 516 runs, including 2 centuries and taking20 wickets in the under 15 competition .As well as performing outstandingly in the junior ranksTim's initial season in senior cricket saw him consolidatea position in the 2nd. grade team where hebatted with surprising maturity for one so young andbowled with great enthusiasm. His efforts were rewardedby his selection in first grade for the final match ofthe season.

1021REFLECTIONS ON THESUMMER OF 1979-80by JOHNWALDRONFIRST AND SECOND GRADE STATUSThe Club's venture into grade cricket was felt by mostplayers to be a resounding success, although the finalpositions of our top two teams on the points table didnot fully justify that feeling. Hopefully Weston Creek CCwill be granted permanent first grade status in the future.Players now will realize it will be a hard road toreach a place in the final four in this sort of competition.Because of the promotion f the Club unearthed a lot oftalent among the young players and fiwith the help of themore experienced players^should be able to bring out thebest in these future stars.BATTINGSTRENGTHObviously the Creek's weakness in the top grades waslack of depth in the batting department. The batting resourceswere stretched to the limit this season by thethe promotion to first grade.Early into the season whenthe teams had been sorted out very little pressure wasexerted on the batsmen in the higher teams from those inlower teams.It is necessary for the Club to have this depthof batting in the first four grades at least to makea successful first grade side. Throughout the season 'thetop two sides bowled out the opposition for meagre totalsbut the batsmen struggled and rarely made the necessaryruns. Unfortunately, there is no second prize in cricket.

1021The picture is not all gloom,as, by the end of the season,several young batsmen had started to show the benefitof their experiences in a tougher league where 'pressure'is the name of the game. This experience can only be gainedout in the middle and batting alongside the likes ofBrian Kensey and Greg Irvine can only be to their advantage.To all promising batsmen wanting to play for WestonCreek, the ball is at your feet!.THE KEY TEAM TO A SUCCESSFUL CLUBLooking at the first four or five top first grade sidesin the ACT competition,it seems fairly evident thatthe same clubs generally have strong second grade sidesas well. I would venture to say that the allround strengthof a club's second grade side is a key factor in anyclub's top grade performance. Players in' the• secondsshould be providing stiff competition for most of theplayers in first grade each week to bring out the best inall concerned.This "criticism" is not levelled at players who playedsecond grade this year, but unfortunately public interestis generally forcussed on the performance of the topteams.'SEMI FINALISTS AND FINALISTSThree teams out of seven reached the semi-finals andtwo of these (4ths and 5ths.) made it to the finals. Theperformances of the finalists during the year reflected agenuine team spirit generated by their captains and amongstthe players themselves. Some of the individual performancesby players should ensure - theiz promotion tohigher grades next year.JUNIORPLAYERSUndoubtably, Weston Creek is the club which genuinelyoffers a chance to young players.Circumstances this yeargave the chance to four players under 16 years of age tobe playing first grade cricket. The future of the Club isassured by the number of players coming out on the juniorranks each year and judging by some of their performancesin senior grades over the Christmas holidays there is alot of talent on the way up.

20TEAMSELECTIONSThe selectors have the unenviable job of judging performancesand maintaining harmony within the club. Such atask provides a delicate balance as most cricketers feelthey have been wronged at some stage of their career.Judging from many player's comments this year, the selectorsachieved a good balance between performances andcontentment of players. The Club policy of having all•captains involved in selections seems to be a good modelon which to build for the future.One possible difficulty, particularly edily in theseason, is to explain to players more fully why such anqsuch a promotion or demotion occured. May be the captainscould discuss the selectors line of reasoning each weekwith their players. The situation in a selectors meetingtakes on a different light when all the teams' performancesbefore them and when issues other than performanceson the field are involved.At present the selectors have a policy of not promotingor demoting a player more than one grade at a timeunder normal circumstances. Can this policy be continuedif the club is to achieve maximum success in top gradecricket?.PITCH PREPARATION AT STIRLINGAgain Pat,Chris & Richard performed honourably as groundsmenand hopefully obtained satisfaction from thelong hours they put in to the pitch. On occasions theyfelt let down by lack of help from members of the teamlisted to play at home. Surely the captain of the teamplaying at home each week could organize a roster amonghis players to help out with the pitch and dressing roomspreparation.CLUBSPIRITOne of the most pleasant aspects of the Weston CreekCricket Club is the Club spirit and friendliness whichexist off the field and was notable to a lot of otherclubs last year. This aspect and the administration hasattracted a number of players to join us from other clubsand should do so again in the future. Our facilities atStirling and publication of a monthly magazine for theplayers are unique in Canberra.

1021However, has the club spirit fully _permeated to allteams on the field and shown up as the "will to win" forWeston Creek? At times last season the drive to win mayhave faltered on the odd occasion. Generating a club spiriton the field when things are not going too well isdifficult enough at times. Long established clubs areoften able to call up these•extra reserves of energy orwhatever, at the crucial time and swing the tide in theirfavour.Hopefully the extra spirit to win for Weston Creekwill grow with time and bring out that little ' hit extrain players.The "spirit to win" certainly does not mean to win atall costs. To win for Weston Creek should mean to winfairly and squarely and not to reduce ourselves to"Sledging" as happens too often in some other top gradeclubs.THE PUBLIC IMAGE OF W.C.C.C.I mentioned earlier that the Club's performance is generallyregarded by the press, public and cricket officialsas that of the first grade team. Well indeed itshould be, but judging by the reception the team aot inthe public view, one felt that the team did not exist.This was not the team's fault or lack of performance • onmany occasions. After our great showing in the final ofthe Twilight competition, one leading official's only commentto one of our members about the result was " it wastoo one sided". Throughout the season certain criticstried to pretend that Weston Creek did not exist.Admittedly no one likes a loser, particularly the generalpublic, but the Club's overall performance did notwarrant such a poor image. 'Clubdecided to build its top side around existing talent,bothyoung and experienced and those new players who saw joiningthe club as a challenge. The policy of encouragingyounger players, even though it did not give direct results,will help the club tremendously next season. Thoseyoung players who have experienced playing in the firstgrade, should now know that it is only application andconcentration that will make them established first gradeplayers.Throughout the season,our bowling was the strong point.Trevor Cobbold and Dick Cotton both showed that they arevery good bowlers who use their experience to best adventage.They both worked very hard at practice and thisshowed in the field. Graham Hine started the season offvery well but was later hampered by injury. His line andlength were always very good.Richard Drew was very effective with his medium pacerson occasions but along with Greg Irvine tended to be erraticat times. Greg with a bit more work -at his bowling,would be a big asset to the side.Both leg-spinners used,Colin Imms and Alan Giles performed creditably and '.withmore experience will get more wickets. Unfortunately, onmany occasions wickets did not suit them.

1021A.C,TIC.AI SECOND GRADE/ CAPTAIN'S REPORTWe did not finish last. We should have finished fourthA sad story but nevertheless true.We lost no fewer than four games by one wicket. It wasthe same story all season. We just did not score enoughruns. Only on three occasions did we manage over 150 runs,and with the batting potential we had, we should havescored many more runs.Bowling and fielding were of a very high standard.Onlytwo teams scored over 150 runs against us and no team scoredover 160. Captain Ray Williams with 29 wickets at anaverage of 10.70 and Tim Overland with 27 wickets at anaverage of 11.15 shared the bowling honours. It was goodto see wicketkeeper turned fielder Neil Fleming win thefielding award closely followed by Mark Burgess • ' who issettling down into a promising wicketkeeper.The potential of the juniors in the 2nd XI is good andif this coming season they work harder in the nets, I seeno reason why a few of them should not be' in contentionfor places in the first XI.Young players I think who will do well next year fromthe 2nd. XI are S.Day, T.Overland,D.Body, R.Lonie, T.Morris,M.Burgess, V.Varma, G.Flynn and A.Mcleod'. 1021' A.C.T.C.A. THIRD GRADE, CAPTAIN'S REPORTThe Thirds had an up and down season, winning six matrches and losing eight (one outright). Despite the lack ofsuccess in winning matches there were some fine individualperformances with the hat by Ron Smith (138 not out )Laurie O'Mara (91), David Body (86 not out), Roger Lonie,(66 not out) and with the ball by Tim Overland (9 for 23)Chris Burgess, Steve James and David Body.Overall fielding was not a good aspect of the team'sgame as much more practice will need to be devoted tothis facet of the game. At times the batting lacked consistencyand on many occasions, suffered from middle ordercollapses. At times also the bowling lacked thedesired penetration. However, with the balanced mixtureof experience and youth available in the third grade, the1980-81 season is one that I am looking forward to withgreat, anticipation. A.C.T.C.A. FOURTH GRADE/ CAPTAIN'S REPORTThe 1979-80 season was an outstanding success for ourClub especially in the 4th. grade. We were a blend of youthand resourceful experience. We completed the home andaway rounds as minor premiers losing only three matches &another game being tied. Thus we had led from the start tothe finish of the season.There were many notable performances with bat and ballthroughout the season. The ones that are easily recalledare the record opening partnership by Pat Flynn (115) andGreg Flynn (102*), Bill Miller and John O'Brien in a fighting73 last wicket partnership. Some of the outstandingfeats were Bob Coughlan 79*, Roger Lonie 77, David Body4 for 85 and 40, Chris Burgess 5 for 29 and 54*, & SteveBarnsley's 4 for 30, 3 for 12 & 4 for 37 in the final rounds.Probably the most outstanding feature displayed by thefourth grade was the way they played the game. They wereenthousiasticfor a win but also happy in defeat. Therewas a purpose to the team- enjoyment and making friends.Several young outstanding players came. through ourranks, many played their first game on turf in 4th grade.Those that went on and played higher grades during theseason included Russell Ayers, David Body, Andrew Mcleod,Roger Lonie, Greg Flynn and Mark Burgess. 'All of theseplayers showed the ability and potential to hold' theirown in higher grades.The core of younger players whom Ifought to retain in 4th. grade also demonstrated theirskills to play higher grade cricket but were happy withthe selectors decisions to retain them in 4th. grade eventhough at times they performed exceptionally well JTo theseplayers- Jim Taylor, Leon Buchanan, Steve Barnsley, GeoffDeacon and Chris Burgess- all of whome were playing theirfirst season of grade cricket for the club better thingswill come their way next season.To the older members of the squad I owe a great deal.Not only did they have experience, which they share withthe younger players but made my job as a captain a loteasier. Their on-the-field suggestions helped me out ofmany a tight spot.

1021Our overall playing skills improved with each game andthis was apparent during the middle of the season when wewon seven matches on the trot and in the final serieswhen so much depended on everyone doing everything correct.The blend of experience and youth was evident in allour games, especially when things were not going well,ourexperienced players stepped in to guide the youngsters .Totfreir credit, they always listened.In closing I would like to thank the executive for thehelp and support throughout the season,Chris Harris forhis part in the selections, R.jy Harding for excellentcare of the equipment. I thank you all for your assistanceand conduct, both on and off the fieid- a credit to theClub.We recorded one loss, three draws and the remainderof the games were won on the first innings.There were several excellent individual performancesduring the season, but I feel it was the team spiritthat saw us through to the finals. For.example the ninecatches in the second round game vs Teachers, and thedismissal of East C.C.C. for less than 50 in one sessionof play in the first semi-final.During the second half of the season, 13 players formedthe squad. This created some problems with team selectionsbut did help stabilize the team for the rest ofthe season. Their prospects in gread cricket look good.After losing the toss and being sent in to bat in theFinal, we declared at 8/151 at the end of the first day.Teachers always looked as though they were playing for adraw, and at the end of the day's play were 7/84 havingfaced 85 overs. 1021C.C.S.C.A, V GRADE, DIV, I (G)CAPTAIN'SREPORTWCCC one-day (G) team started the season slowly winningonly a handful of games leading up to the Christmasbreak. With the split up of the one-day competition intotwo divisions after Christmas the team really excelled bywinning all but two games. These wins were sufficient tosee the side finish on top of its division and being theminor premiers - a tremendous effort considering that itis the first time it is in the competetion.The team was confident going into the semi-final againstSouth Woden (G), however the latter side proved toogood on the day.During the season there were many fine individual performances.Highlights that spring to mind are Gabe Bloxham'stwo half centuries, Jim Nuttall's 50, the 94- runpartnership between Andrew Newman and Bill Northam, PaulMcLean's four catches in the one game, Mark Feeley's 7/12Bob Burton's 5/15 and Bob Powski's 28 runs 'in 8 minutesoff 14 balls.The end of season Presentation Night saw Bill Northamcollect the batting award(324, Av 17.84) Mark Feeley thebowling award (35 wkts. at 9.24) and Bob Huey the fieldingaward. Bob Burton(Highest Aggregate) and Mark Feeley(bowling average) also received awards from the Canberra-City and Suburban C.A.The members of the team are to be congratulated ontheir conduct and sportsmenship both on and off the fieldIn closing I wish to extend my sincere thanks to the playersfor their friendship and support during the seasonand also the club administration for giving me the opportunityto captain the side.I wish the Club every success in the coming season.BruceRussell

V GRADE, DIV, II (R)CAPTAIN'SREPORTWCCC one-day (R) team enjoyed mixed fortunes throughoutthe season, having a wi.n in the second game a longstring of losses, and then finishing with five wins fromthe last six games.This team serves two important: functions, firstly itprovides a proving ground for younger players - playerssuch as Chris Burgess and Graham Drew who gave valuableservice to the team before rightfully being promoted tohigher grades. Secondly the team provides the opportunityto players like myself who came relatively late to thegame and who simply wish to have a game of cricket :eachSaturday.The team possibly suffered through having so many changes,seldom having the same team from one week to thenextHowever this must be expected, and I believe that itwas through the regular players accepting this fact and.believing in themselves that we had such success in theclosing stages of the season.Of the regular players, David Twiss provided great serviceas an opening bowler, backbone of the batting andas an excellent fielder.Keith Parker was another player who showed steady improvementthroughout the season. Keith has developed intoa consistent and accurate bowler, and will be puttingpressure on bowlers in higher grades next season.On behalf of the others who captained the team,BarneyDevlin (promoted to batter things) and Frank Lonie (Temprorarilyretired due to injury) I would like to thank allthose who played with the team during the seasonDavidFlatt

1021Women'sCricketWOMEN'S CRICKET CAPTAINS REPORT.¥1979/80 was a season of mixed fortunes for the Women'steam. Of 12 rounds played we won 6 on the first' inningstied 2, drew 1 lost 1 on first innings and lost 2 outright.With these results we were in the 4th place at theend of the competetion.We lost the semi-final by quite a big margin. Lookingback over the season there were many highlights.The firstever tie in the history of the Association (vs Fourseven-B) Cathy Smith and Tiani 0'Toole being selected in theACT team which took part in the Australian Championshipsin Adelaide.Cathy Smith's 111 not out vs ANU. Tiani O'Toole and RobynWhittington 's partnership of 98. Donna Carney's battingin the second innings of the semi-final.The lack of a coach placed us at a disadvantage withthe other teams, however Keith Simmons' help and encouragementthroughout the season was greatly appreciated byus all. Other supporters who must be mentioned are FrankMaly umpire extrodinare; Greg Ratford, Rosemary andGeoff Carney who gave us much encouragement off the field;Sue Deacon Ana Wright Ken and Keith Parker who worked atthe stalls; the committee of the club for their help andsupport during the season.Finally I wish the Women a better season next year.HeatherMacdonald

1021Statistical History of the ClubCOMPILED BY CHRIS BODYThe statistical history of the Club from its inceptionin 1975-76 to the end of the 1979-80 season appear inprint for the first time in the following pages.In the 1975-76 season and 1976-77 season the Club fieldedtwo teams in the sub-district grades. The followingseason the Club expanded to field four teams.Sub-district'A', Sub-district 'B', and two teams in the one-day competetion,with the Sub 'A' side making it to the final andlosing and Sub 'B' winning the Final.The big change occurred in 1978-79 when WCCC was admittedto 3rd and 4th. grades of the ACTCA. Again the Clubexpanded and this time to six teams- 3rd. grade,4th.gradeSub 'A', Sub 'B' and two one day sides. In that year the3rd grade made it to the final. Having well placed on thefirst day rain washed out the second day thereby robbingWCCC the premiership. Sub 'B' made the final and lost.The 1979-80 season saw the Club expand to field sevensenior teams with its provisional first grade status.After five years of senior cricket the Club now hasover 100 members. In its first year there were 44 membersOut of the 44, nine are still playing, while three membershaving retired from playing are active in ;the Club'sadministration.The following statistics span over five years of seniorcricket from 1975-76 to 1979-80. The figures includescores in semi-final and final rounds.I would like to thank Percy Samara-Wickrama, Ian Phillipsand Gabe Bloxham for providing material and helpingme with the statistics.
