Orchard Park’s ‘Great 8’By Mark AdairAustin Goltz had a huge night as he helped OrchardPark to a 35-20 win over Jamestown in the Class AAchampionship game.“He played great,” Tundo said. “Austin had a fantasticgame.”Goltz caught 4 passes for 57 yards and a pair of TDs.He also intercepted a pass -and had another interceptionwiped out by a questionableinterference call.“Austin is very dynamic,”coach Gene Tundo said. “Hecan do a lot of things. He hasgreat hands. He’s quick andhe’s strong.”Goltz is one of the fewplayers at Orchard Park tohave started on both offenseand defense, as he starts atWR and DB.“We haven’t had too manykids who have done that,”Tundo said. “He’s a greatreceiver and he can carry theball, which he does sometimes.”Goltz is also important tothe offense when he doesn’thave the ball.“He also does a lot ofblocking for our runningbacks,” Tundo said. “In someof our schemes, he’s the leadblocker.”Goltz is also versatile ondefense.“We have him at cornerback,”Tundo said, “He playsin Man coverage or zone coverage. He could play linebackeror safety, too. He’s very unique. He does whateverwe need him to.”He started last season and helped the Quakers wintheir second state championship.“He made several great plays in the semifinal gameagainst Binghamton,” Tundo said, “and he played very wellin State championship game.”Against Jamestown, Goltz opened the scoring in thesecond quarter when he caught a 28-yard TD pass fromBen Holmes. He gave Orchard Park a 21-14 lead when hecaught an 11-yard TD pass.“Both scores where check offs,” Tundo said. “Ben threwit up and Austin made a great adjustment. Austin re-directedand a made a great play.”Goltz intercepted a pass in the second quarter to end aJamestown drive. He also intercepted a pass in the endzone in the fourth quarter but he was called for interferenceon the play.“It was not a penalty,” Tundo said. “He made a great, great play on the ball.”Goltz is one of the Quakers more athletic players.“He is one of the best basketball players at OrchardPark,” Tundo said. “He’s a team captain and the best playeron the lacrosse team.”Goltz usually plays attackon the lacrosse team but, lastspring, showed his versatilityin that sport, too.“In Section 6 title gameagainst Clarence, we movedhim to midfield,” Tundo said.“We needed someone whohad speed and his ability.Even though he was out ofposition, he had an amazinggame. He is that kind of anathlete. You don’t get a kid likethat over the course of yourcareer. You don’t get manykids who are good at threesports.”Goltz is also a solid student, maintaining an academicaverage on the 90s.“To be a 3-sport athlete andhave the grades that he does,”Tundo said, “He really has itall together.”Goltz will attend Princetonnext fall on a lacrosse scholarship.Photo by Mark AdairOrchard Park’s Austin Goltz caught 2 TD passesand intercepted a pass in the Quakers 35-20 winover Jamestown in the Class AA title game.5He says that“We had a better talent lastyear,” Goltz said. “We hadthree linemen above 300pounds. This year, it’s not anyone guy. We have heart andsoul. Even if we are down, we get right back in the saddleand keep playing hard.”Goltz also had a new experience this season... losing. When Jamestown beat Orchard Park 35-28 earlier thisseason, it was the first football game he did not walk offthe field as a winner.“For the kids in my grade, that was our first time losinga football game since the seventh grade,” he said. “Thebus ride home was pretty quiet. Everyone knew we had aresponsibility and we didn’t fulfill that.”He said that the entire team dedicated itself to neverlosing another game.“The next day at practice everyone worked harder thanI have ever seen them work,” he said. “Losing was notgoing to become a routine. We don’t lose football gamesat Orchard Park.”
