SCHOOLPROGRAMSIn 2011 close to 600 students participatedin education programs led by museum staffand volunteers without ever leaving theirclassroom. The History to Go van bringseducational opportunities to the students ofBVSD through programs such as Dia de losMuertos, or Day of the Dead, whichcelebrates the Mexican holiday of honoringthe passing of loved ones. In addition, theMuseum brought other programs out toschools such as History Detectives.In 2011, 1,235 students participated in tours ofthe Museum’s exhibits and engaged in hands-onactivities which further strengthened the conceptsthey learned while on the tour. In addition toBoulder’s early history, students had anopportunity to learn about the history of flight inColorado, NOAA, photography and dogs, and1968 in America.
GIRLSCOUTSFor over 10 years local Girland Boy Scouts have turnedto the Museum as a sourcefor earning badges. In 2011,312 scouts participated inthe Museum’s educationalprogramming.Girl Scout badges such at Local Lore and Listening to thePast are natural fits for the History Museum becausescouts are required to participate in local history byvisiting historical buildings and cemeteries, play gamesfrom the past and listen to community stories.In May local Girl Scouts attendeda day long Dog Camp and evenvisited the local animal shelter.Girl Scouts ona UniversityHill walkingtour. Behindthe scouts is thehistoric Norlinhome.HISTORYDETECTIVESAfter a tour of the museum and its exhibits students engage with historical artifacts, photographs,newspapers and clothing to delve deeper in to the history of Boulder and the region.7
