Theelectoral boundaries are shown on Figure 3-1 and include the City of Port Alberni, the District ofUcluelet, the District of Tofino and Electoral Areas ‘A’ Bamfield, ‘B’ Beaufort, ‘C’ Long Beach, ‘D’Sproat Lake, ‘E’ Beaver Creek, and ‘F’ Cherry Creek. It is bound onthe north by the Forbidden Plateau, on the east by the Beaufort Range and Mount Arrowsmith, onthe south by the Nitnat River and Lake, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The ACRD experiences a predominantly maritime climate with heavy rainfall on the West Coastdue to the prevailing weather systems that are forced to rise over the mountain ranges. In 2000, Clayoquot Sound became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Approximately half of theACRD is in the Reserve area including the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and the coastal areanorth west of the Park. Biosphere reserves are areas promoting sustainable use of the land toensure conservation of biodiversity. They are internationally recognized, nominated by nationalgovernments and remain under jurisdiction of the Province. The Clayoquot Biosphere Trustprovides funds to local research, education, and training projects that meet the objectives ofconservation and sustainable development. The Pacific Rim National Park Reserve is located on the West Coast and attracts a growingnumber of visitors each year (estimated to be roughly 778,000 per year, at present). The parkcontains cultural history and a range of ecosystems that supports wildlife species such as blackbears and cougars.(60717-DRF-RPT-07 Oct 04.doc) 3-1
