The following policies and practices willbe enacted by the ACRD and local municipalities:<strong>Waste</strong> <strong>Management</strong> Facility RequirementsAll municipally-owned waste management facilities that handle putrescible MSW, including transferstations, landfills, recycling facilities and composting facilities, located in areas that are accessibleto, or frequented by bears are bear-proofed. Disposal facilities in particular shall consist of a landfillinside a properly designed, constructed and operated electric fence or a bear-proof transfer station.Public <strong>Waste</strong> ReceptaclesLitter and recycling receptacles in public areas such as ballparks, parks, trailheads and municipalroadways are approved bear proof containers.<strong>Waste</strong> Collection Bylaws<strong>Waste</strong> collection bylaws contain requirements that minimize the opportunities for bears and otherwildlife to access waste. Such requirements will include:• Bear-proof garbage storage of residential waste prior to collection• Specific time for residential curbside set out of waste on day of pick-up• Mandatory use of approved containers by residents• Criteria for approved residential containers• Criteria for approved bear-proof commercial collection containers• Mandatory use of approved bear proof commercial collection containers by waste haulersand waste generators that set out putrescible waste for collectionAwareness and EducationOn-going awareness and education campaign for waste generators that addresses “bearawareness”.
