Solid Waste Management Plandraft for discussionFor the Alberni Valley, an estimate of the waste composition was done using the results a 2004waste composition study done for the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN). The results of this studywere adjusted to reflect the lesser amount of waste diversion activities in the Alberni Valley incomparison to the RDN. The estimated waste composition for the waste disposed at the AlberniValley Landfill is shown in Figure 4-2.Miscellaneous16%Paper15%Electronics1%Construction/Demo13%Glass1%Metal4%Plastic12%Household Hazardous1%Compostables37%Figure 4-2Estimated Composition of Alberni Valley Waste DisposedThe variation in the estimated waste composition between the West Coast and Alberni Valley isshown in Figure 4-3. The main variations are:• Significantly higher percentage of construction and demolition waste on the west coast, reflective of the construction boom in that area; and• Higher percentage of compostable waste in the Alberni Valley, possibly reflective of the largeramount of yard waste generated, but also reflective of the lower percentage of constructionwaste in the waste stream.(60717-DRF-RPT-07 Oct 04.doc) 4-2
